The future of AUTOMATED LOGISTICS is game-changing. It's about reshaping how goods move worldwide. Let's refocus.   AUTONOMOUS TRUCKING will solve a major challenge: driverless long-distance cargo movement. It addresses shelf time increase, driver shortages and drivers work-life-balance. But an autonomous truck isn't autonomous transport—it's just one piece of the puzzle.   MORE CHALLENGES come before and after the journey: handling diverse goods like liquids, pallets, containers, or refrigerated items. The first and last miles are tough—every factory, yard, and process is different. Drivers and logistics experts connect vehicles, secure loads, and manage a complex, intricate process to ensure cargo arrives safely and on time.   To AUTOMATE LOGISTICS, we need to go beyond the vehicle and recognize the essential human role. Automation is about supporting these efforts, making logistics safer, smarter, and more efficient. It also means redefining INTERFACES between different parts of the system, involving multiple stakeholders, and reorganizing value streams in logistics.   At critical HANDOVER POINTS, people still keep things moving. 🚛 Buckle up because the future of transportation is hitting the fast lane!  Aurora Innovation Inc. is gearing up to launch 20 driverless trucks on Interstate 45 between Dallas and Houston by year's end, with thousands more planned to hit the road in the next few years. Equipped with cutting-edge sensors, these self-driving giants are set to change transportation. Safety is one of the main questions many still have with this innovation. Although safety is a top priority for companies like Aurora without specific federal regulations, trust in these innovators is key. Since 2021, Aurora's trucks have autonomously traveled over 1 million miles on public highways with human safety drivers on board, resulting in just three crashes, all due to mistakes by human drivers in other vehicles.  What does this mean for the future of truck drivers? Five state-of-the-art driverless logistics delivery vehicles were officially launched, marking the culmination of two months of extensive joint testing. 🤖 These innovative vehicles, equipped with cutting-edge 5G （4G） and artificial intelligence technologies, can reach speeds up to 40 km/h, boast a range of 180 kilometers, and carry loads up to 1,000 kilograms. Daily, they efficiently manage deliveries, servicing 43 different stations and outlets. 🌐 This deployment is just the beginning, with plans to expand to 30 vehicles within the year, transforming Ordos into a national model city for freight distribution. This marks the latest pilot aimed at advancing Multi-Modal Logistics with our key partner, Michigan Central In the pilot, Newlab tests a potential solution to "the last five feet," which represents the gap between different technologies within the logistics process that stands in the way of commercializing automated, autonomous trucking. While noteworthy progress has developed in autonomous technologies for various shipping operations, such as long-haul over-the-road (OTR) trucking and warehouse yard vehicles, this gap stands out as a substantial obstacle for logistics providers looking to fully unlock the benefits of automation. To tackle this challenge we worked with Google, University of Michigan, Universal Logistics Holdings, Inc., Crowley, FreightRoll, BlueSpace.ai, and GAUSSIN GROUP, to explore what it could look like to reshape commercial trucking hubs to facilitate true end-to-end automation.
