The target is to raise £50,000 for mental health awareness charity Mates in Mind. This week is 'No Falls Week', a campaign created by No Falls Foundation (the charity devoted exclusively to the work at height sector). 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐍𝐨 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 Falls from height are consistently the leading cause of workplace fatalities in the UK. The latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that 40 people lost their lives due to a fall from height in 2022/2023. Falls from height were responsible for 30% of all workplace deaths. Every year thousands of non-fatal falls take place – it’s estimated to be as many as 100 every day. Disclaimers and waivers might look like a safety net, but in the UK, they’re often not as ironclad as you think. Under laws like the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and the Consumer Rights Act 2015, organisations cannot use disclaimers to avoid responsibility for: • Death or personal injury caused by negligence. • Misrepresentation or breaches of statutory duties. If an organisation chooses the cheapest activity provider over the most experienced and safest, and something goes wrong, that disclaimer won’t save them. Courts take a dim view of cost-cutting when it compromises safety. This is a powerful reminder for organisations to focus on due diligence rather than relying on paperwork to dodge liability. When selecting suppliers, safety and proven expertise must be non-negotiable priorities—not just the price tag.
