Scientists from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University, leveraging the power of AI, have discovered a new class of antibiotics by screening millions of compounds. Experimental results on mice showed that these two newly discovered antibiotics have significant therapeutic effects against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). Last week at #BIO2024, I had the opportunity to discuss the role #AIML is having in drug discovery, specifically focusing on target evaluation, with Alex Zhavoronkov (Insilico Medicine), Martin Akerman (Envisagenics), Stacie Calad-Thomson (NVIDIA), Etai Jacob (AstraZeneca), and Nitya Sridhar. I thoroughly enjoyed this panel for several reasons. First, it was insightful to compare/contrast perspectives from both biotech and pharma. Second, it is exciting to hear about the growing number of applications AI is impacting from identifying novel targets, to prioritization of existing targets, to evaluating combo treatments. The creativity of our industry continues to grow! Third, despite recent advancements, it was unanimous that experimental validation is still necessary (i.e. purely in silico approaches alone are not enough). At Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine (#MyCompany), we are taking a leading role in applying advanced computational approaches to Target Evaluation, alongside well-established approaches to identify the next generation of targets.
