While the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) may not be required in your state, it is the standard of care in the industry. The MAHC has some great guideline around minimum initial and ongoing training for your team! Pre-Service (before your team takes the stand) should include site-specific policies and procedures including lifeguard zones, rotations, minimum staffing and EAPS, a demonstration of site-specific safety skills, review of facility & attraction rules, and verification of skills proficiency. You should also have a solid in-service plan in place that includes how often your team will train, how you're tracking certifications, and opportunities for your team to demonstrate test-ready skills. Don't forget to DOCUMENT the 3 Ws - who attended, when was training held, and what did you cover! And always remember that your local or state codes may require additional training! Since about 2020, our water quality in Sarasota Bay has improved so that it is now better than at any time over the past 10 to 15 years. As a result, we are documenting a recovery of seagrass that we think will give us an increase of several hundred acres of this vital food source for manatees, fisheries habitat, and blue carbon feature. These improvements have not been easy or cheap to bring about, but we are seeing the benefits of over $300 million worth of ongoing wastewater upgrades and stormwater retrofit projects, including this neat project at the City of Sarasota’s 100-year-old Bobby Jones public golf course. We have more people per square mile in our watershed than either Tampa Bay or Biscayne Bay, so it’s hard to find locations where a regional stormwater project can be placed. This ingenuous project takes half of a slightly downsized golf course and turns it into an offline treatment wetland that retrofits 8 square miles of watershed that was developed before modern stormwater regulations and which should keep 4,000 pounds of nitrogen out of our bay. A round of applause to the City of Sarasota, SWFWMD and FDEP (along with others) who funded the design and construction of this project. With projects like this, we believe that we can maintain the water quality improvements that we are starting to see here in Sarasota Bay. #sarasotabay #waterquality #stormwater
