When fish are taken from our oceans faster than they can reproduce, their population numbers decline. This over-fishing upsets marine ecosystems. It’s also bad for human populations that rely on fish for protein in their diets. To manage fishing areas sustainably, we need accurate data on how many fish exist and how abundant they will be ... https://lnkd.in/gWKXwBhK

From the visuals it is not hard to see the problem. Where are all the trees?! Multitudes of studies from all the arid regions of the world have documented this phenomenon. The deforestation of the Med has been ongoing since Roman times. As an island surrounded by plentiful moisture laden winds from any direction, it should not be an insurmountable problem to restore the water cycle. Planting trees is the solution. These release the volatile compounds to create rain again. With the political will and a modest budget I don't see why the climate cannot be restored within a decade. Deserts are being greened all over the world, why not Sicily? Could agroforestry with funding from the EU be a start? @200 trees/ha they would need c. 500mil trees. What are the support payments to farmers currently?
A sobering read on the nexus of farming, water and climate change from an island which was the food basket of the Mediterranean world for millennia. https://lnkd.in/ec6jSiaa
