🌿 Build an Automated Hydroponic System: I am always exploring innovative agricultural practices that can benefit our community and beyond. Recently, I embarked on an exciting project to build a hydroponic system—perfect for urban settings and maximizing space. First, we'll construct the frame. I'm using steel tubing left over from a previous project, but there are many materials that can be used. One side of the frame is built higher than the other so water will flow through the channels by gravity. The water channels are made from vinyl downspouts cut to a length of 30 inches. Holes are cut every six inches on center. To ensure a smooth cut, run the hole saw bit in reverse. You can also alternate the hole positions every other channel to create a checkerboard pattern, maximizing space for plants to grow. Next, we used 1-inch PVC for pumping water to each channel, capped at each end with a tee in the center for a hose connection to the water pump. We drilled holes in the side and inserted rubber grommets for microtubes. For water collection, we used 4-inch PVC, cut and modified for our system's needs. Installing the water pump and drainage system was the next step. We also automated the system with a control panel to interface with sensors measuring air temperature, humidity, CO2 levels, water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, and more. This automation, managed through Mycodo software, allows for precise control of the growing environment, ensuring optimal conditions for our plants. 🌱 Interested in learning more about hydroponics and sustainable agriculture?
