In Nuuk, Sermersook Municipality, Greenland, Kingdom of Denmark, BIOSIS has designed a low impact residential housing complex. The complex is comprised of 5 prism shaped structures, located on a site initially deemed unusable. Designers focused on biophilic structures which emulate the surrounding natural environment. The unique shapes are also products of working with the existing landscape, rather than altering it to accommodate the structures. Strategic placement of openings and balconies to maximize sun exposure and reduce wind help reduce energy needs. To further this interior efficiency, the facade of the buildings are covered with heat-treated thermo wood, which is durable in harsh climates and resistant to fungi, rot, and mold. The buildings add 47 residential to the city, with commercial space on the ground floor. As the world continues to face more frequent unpredictable weather and harsher climates, it’s important that our built environment also adapts to this new reality. The introduction of new materials, innovations in energy conservation and diversification, and integrating the natural environment into our cities, are all ways in which we can we can better prepare ourselves to be more resilient. In West aan Zee, Terschelling, Frisian Islands, The Netherlands, a contemporary vacation home put low impact sustainable living at the heart of its design. The net-zero home, also boasts a zero carbon footprint. Achieving this illustrious feat required a multitude of design choices, including good insulation, proper orientation to reduce solar gain, heat pump heating and cooling system, rooftop solar panels to reduce energy consumption, and burying ground floor. The entire facade of the residence is finished in biobased materials, which were sourced and installed locally. While vacation homes can cause unnecessary burdens on the environment, there are innovative ways to reduce their impact. This home is a stunning example of net zero living and should act as a model for future sustainable housing. Exciting news in sustainable design! 🌍 A stunning 10-storey mass-timber building, is setting a new standard for commercial spaces at Toronto’s East Bayfront. This net-zero emissions structure at George Brown College’s waterfront campus is the first of its kind in Ontario. Featuring a 40% window-to-wall ratio, strategically placed windows allow for optimal natural light and energy efficiency. Milwaukee, already home to the world’s tallest timber tower, may soon add an even taller wooden skyscraper to its skyline. Vancouver-based firm Michael Green Architects (MGA) has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking 55-story tower constructed primarily from mass timber, a compressed, multilayered wood product. If completed, this tower would surpass the current tallest wooden building, the 25-story Ascent tower, and become Wisconsin's tallest building. The proposed tower is part of the redevelopment of the Marcus Performing Arts Center, transforming a concrete parking lot into a vibrant space with residential units, offices, retail spaces, cafes, and public plazas. The estimated $700 million project is currently under review by the city, with construction expected to set new global standards for mass timber architecture. Mass timber offers an environmentally friendly alternative to concrete and steel, both of which are major contributors to global emissions. Timber, on the other hand, acts as a carbon sink, sequestering carbon throughout its lifetime. MGA’s founder, Michael Green, argues that timber skyscrapers are crucial in addressing climate change, providing a sustainable construction option. Despite challenges such as sourcing sustainable timber and navigating building regulations, mass timber is becoming more cost-competitive, with updated building codes in the U.S. and Europe allowing taller wooden buildings. In Milwaukee, the tower will feature a mix of timber, steel, and concrete, with wood making up around 90% of the building material. In the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City, Mexico, a mixed-use apartment building adorned with planters, is a welcome addition to the city’s skyline. Topping out at 13-stories, the new tower is primarily residential apartments, with commercial space on the first floor and a rooftop garden. The builders wanted to create a meaningful addition to the revitalization of the neighborhood, while being conscious of the local community. The triangular shaped building comes to a curved point of stunning floor to ceiling glass windows. The oversized windows used throughout the project, allow for natural light to effortlessly illuminate the interior spaces, while offering views of the city for its residents. In a conscious effort to reduce the projects overall carbon footprint, cantalevered walls allow for extra space for planters adorning the facades of the building. Underground bicycle storage and access to local public transportation, gives the residents access to alternative transportation which reduces carbon emissions. The rooftop of the building is encircled by gardens for residents to enjoy. A rainwater harvesting system, collects and recycles rainwater for the buildings vegetation. The strategic placement of terraces and courtyards allow for green spaces to provide clean air and views of nature for the residents and surrounding community. The success of this project, will hopefully inspire developers in urban environments, to build sustainably, as lowering the carbon footprints of our cities will benefit us all.
