Who can forget Elaine’s hilariously awkward dance at the company holiday party on Seinfeld? It captures the universal charm and quirkiness of these events—whether in person or on Zoom, something funny, awkward, or unexpected always happens. A friend recently shared a Zoom holiday party story where a White Elephant gift exchange led to someone receiving a can of sardines. Her deadpan response upon learning the gifts would actually be mailed out? “I’m allergic to fish.” Funny on so many levels. This got me reminiscing about past work holiday parties, especially those at Futures Group International (now part of Palladium: Make It Possible). Our less-than-decadent potluck in the conference room was actually a well-attended highlight of the year. Why? The legendary skit. Written in secret, it humorously and quite ruthlessly roasted the company and mostly the senior leadership. And it was known that there would never be any repercussion on any skit writer or performer from the top for the content. These skits grew into year-long inside jokes and allowed for joint catharsis. The culture at Futures was straightforward but powerful: humor, accessibility, and connection. Senior leaders ate lunch with staff in the dingy back “kitchen,” making it a space everyone used. The result? Long tenures, people returning to work there throughout their careers, and many of us are still in touch today - decades later. So, cheers to the workplace holiday party, however hokey and however many metaphorical cans of sardines are gifted! When done right (not necessarily fancy), it matters.
