Want proof that HR is only there to protect your employer? Story time! After I'd already been terminated from my position with Milestone Technologies, Inc. (via after hours phone call from Susan Crocker to my personal line, which in retrospect I should not have even answered, but they caught me off guard) I was directed to sign a document which I now believe was only to enable them to claim that I quit my job in order to deny me unemployment benefits. This document offered me two options: 1. Be enrolled in a company "rehoming" program, a 30 day program where I (and in theory, my former employer) would look for other employment within the company. I would also be responsible for paying my portion of the benefits, which without pay I knew I could not afford to do. Who wants to feel like an unwanted pet, anyway? 2. Voluntary resignation. I am still unable to understand how they can honestly use this wording after I'd already been effectively terminated, unless they somehow consider leave without pay still being employed. Regardless, I have of course appealed the decision made by the unemployment office, but as that process takes weeks and still does not guarantee a different outcome, I wanted to make this post in an attempt to shed light on the avenues being taken by dishonest employers and their equally shady employees to avoid paying earned benefits that could help keep me and my family from being homeless. So, what should you take away from this post? If you are let go, especially in questionable circumstances, do not sign anything! Document everything they do and ask you to do after the fact.
