Business in the front, party in the back... literally. This Barton Hills home, built by Mark Odom Studio, utilized its steeply sloped lot to create a respective and timeless facade, while the back of the house reveals its true size and epic city views. This is what I call a perfect balance of both exterior and interior design. It's not magic – just talented architects turning a challenging element into a home's secret weapon. #austinarchitecture #austindesign #atxhomes #austinluxury #atxrealestate #austinluxuryhomes

Oliver Leech Architects designed Butterfly House, a new compact home that supports multigenerational living. This future-proofed home enables a family member to reside within the plot of an existing family home. Positioned in the southern tip of the main house’s garden, the new structure occupies a small triangular corner, constrained on two sides. The interior gives way to large open-plan living spaces, while the exterior is wrapped in burnt Japanese timber cladding that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding trees. The spaces are unified through a restrained material palette, featuring polished concrete floors and pale clay plaster walls, which tie the spaces together and highlight the ceiling structure. In contrast to the dark exterior, the interior finishes evoke a muted, calm mood, serving as a backdrop to the warm, rich tones of the larch and oak joinery. Material simplicity extends into the two bathrooms, each illuminated by openable Velux skylights. Mirrors reflect the greenery outside, enhancing the interior’s connection to nature. The inclusion of the Val washbasin and Pro WC adds an understated elegance to the bathroom design. Popular with architects and designers across the world, the Val collection, designed by Konstantin Grcic, features simple architectural lines, extremely narrow edges with fine surface structures and includes washbasins, WCs, trays, and bathtubs. This exterior design appears to be a combination of modern and traditional architectural styles. Here’s an analysis of the elements visible: 1. Material Use: The building incorporates wood, stone, and glass, emphasizing natural and contemporary aesthetics. The wooden elements, visible in the facade and roof details, bring warmth and contrast to the lighter stone or concrete walls. 2. Architectural Features: Arched Windows: These are a classic design element, lending a sense of tradition and elegance to the structure. Cone-shaped Tower: This feature adds a unique and almost medieval or fairy-tale-like character. Modern Rounded Volumes: The curved structures in the background integrate a sleek and modern look, balancing the traditional elements. Angular and Straight Lines: The juxtaposition of arches and modern geometric forms provides a dynamic contrast. 3. Integration with Nature: The design incorporates green roofs and landscaped terraces, blending the structure with the surrounding environment. The plants soften the overall structure and add an eco-friendly aspect. 4. Lighting: The exterior lighting highlights specific architectural elements, such as arches and wooden textures, enhancing the ambiance during evening hours. 5. Hierarchy of Spaces: The structure displays a well-planned hierarchy, with the large tower acting as a focal point. The staggered volumes and terraces suggest multi-functional or tiered spaces. 6. Overall Style: This design reflects a mix of neo-classical (due to arches and symmetry) and modern organic architecture, emphasizing curves and nature-inspired forms. It could be a luxury residential complex, resort, or cultural institution, given the level of detail and harmony in the design. Let me know if you'd like a further breakdown or analysis of any specific feature.
