Not all sales territory openings are equal... When faced with vacant territories, sales leaders sometimes default to seeking carbon copy replacements. However in medical sales, a huge factor in determining the optimal rep profile is the territory's history. Inheriting a high-performing territory with loyal accounts may allow for a steward focused on relationships. Low-performing zones need a hunter to rebuild traction. Why do companies assign terrible job titles to their salespeople? SMB Account Executive Enterprise Regional Sales Manager Sales Development Representative Business Development Representative Account Development Representative (the latest poor SDR or BDR equivalent!) How have these become the standard titles in the industry? I remember first hearing the AE and SDR titles several years ago. Thinking they were clumsy and ill-conceived. Conjured up by people who clearly don’t understand sales. No prospect wants to think they are being sold to. It renders them powerless in the process. Starts off a potential working relationship on the wrong foot. The top salespeople know their job is to facilitate collaboration. Not to dominate and control the conversation. To be a partner in the buying process. Buying process, not sales process. My sales increased significantly when helping my prospect to buy. Daniel Pink prefers the title Partnership Manager. In contrast Customer Success Manager for existing clients just feels right. Surely we want our customers to enjoy success & they want to succeed? So we need to find much better job titles for salespeople. To describe the value they can bring. Without using Sales, Representative, Enterprise, SMB or Executive.
