Web3, short for "Web 3.0," is a term that refers to the third generation of the internet and the evolution of the World Wide Web. While the concept is still evolving, Web3 envisions a decentralized, user-centric internet that offers greater control, privacy, and security to individuals. Here are some key aspects of Web3: 1. Decentralization: Web3 aims to move away from the centralization of power and control that is prevalent in Web 2.0 (the current internet). This involves reducing reliance on a few major corporations and instead utilizing decentralized technologies like blockchain to distribute control and data across a network of peers. 2. Blockchain Technology: Blockchains, which are distributed and immutable ledgers, play a central role in Web3. They enable secure and transparent transactions, data storage, and smart contracts, which can automate various processes. 3. Cryptocurrencies: Many Web3 applications and platforms use cryptocurrencies as a means of value transfer and incentive mechanisms. These digital currencies enable micropayments, decentralized finance (DeFi), and more. 4. User Control and Privacy: In Web3, users have greater control over their data and digital identity. They can choose what information they share and with whom. This contrasts with Web 2.0, where personal data is often monetized by companies. 5. Interoperability: Web3 promotes interoperability between different platforms and services. This means that users can have a seamless experience across various applications and platforms, and data can be shared more easily between them. 6. Smart Contracts: Smart contracts are self-executing agreements with the terms of the contract directly written into code. They automate processes and transactions, eliminating the need for intermediaries. 7. DApps (Decentralized Applications): Web3 fosters the development of DApps, which are applications that run on blockchain technology and are often open-source. These applications can serve various purposes, from social networks to gaming and finance. 8. Digital Identity: Web3 explores new ways of managing digital identities, allowing users to own and control their online personas more securely. Web3 is seen by many as a potential solution to various issues associated with Web 2.0, such as data breaches, privacy concerns, and the dominance of tech giants. However, it's still a rapidly evolving concept, and the extent to which it will be realized and impact our digital lives remains to be seen. The success of Web3 depends on the adoption of decentralized technologies, regulatory frameworks, and user acceptance.

Why is Ethereum not scalable ❓ 👉🏻 Ethereum's current TPS (Transactions per Second) is between 20-40, a figure that might seem quite low when compared to traditional systems like Visa. However, this restricted transaction throughput is not a limitation but a deliberate design choice to maintain decentralization and security. 👉🏻 Monolithic blockchains like Ethereum were the first design approach to building blockchains. The idea was that a blockchain could handle every aspect, from processing transactions and verifying them to achieving consensus among nodes. This "do everything yourself" approach allows anyone to validate the chain independently but also imposes some inherent problems with scaling while retaining the core principle of decentralization. ⭐️ Limitation of Monolithic Blockchain : 1️⃣ Advanced Hardware vs. Decentralization: Monolithic chains require advanced hardware to process more transactions, but this expensive hardware can limit the number of users who can run nodes, compromising both network security and verification. 2️⃣ Validator Bootstrapping and Security Fragmentation: When establishing a new monolithic blockchain, one must set up a secure validator network. The need for individualized security for each new chain contributes to a fragmented security landscape. 3️⃣ Limited Autonomy: Applications built on shared monolithic chains have to adhere to preset rules and community norms, which curtails their ability to adapt or make autonomous decisions. 🔩 As a result, to avoid centralization and to maintain this level of accessibility, the transaction throughput is intentionally kept limited. 👉🏻 Many modular ecosystems are working to tackle these problems by dividing the system into separate layers, each having dedicated functions. This separation means that one part of the blockchain takes care of execution, one focuses on data availability, while another focuses on consensus and more. ⭐️ Modular Stack : 1️⃣ Execution: Computing transactions to update the network state. 2️⃣ Settlement: Verifying or disputing proofs (optional). 3️⃣ Data Availability: Ensuring data is accessible. 4️⃣ Consensus: Agreeing on block number, order, and contents. During last week’s Payments Association of South Africa's international payments conference, #PIPC2023, in discussing CBDCs, a panel raised the issue of blockchain interoperability, highlighting concerns about the lack of compatibility between different blockchain platforms. Lack of interoperability leads to isolated blockchain ecosystems with unique functions, resulting in complexities and inefficiencies. Blockchain interoperability is essential for the long-term growth of the market, enabling different blockchain systems to exchange data and value seamlessly, much like a universal translator for blockchains. Earlier this year, R3 and Adhara introduced ‘Harmonia’, an open-source solution for cross-chain atomic settlement, and successfully achieved interoperability between Corda and enterprise Ethereum in collaboration with banks like Goldman Sachs, Santander, and UBS. https://lnkd.in/dcDqNuKS SWIFT has also conducted experiments with Chainlink, to provide connectivity across various public and private blockchains, exploring efficient tokenized value transfers.
