For over two decades as an HVAC Sales Engineer the hardest part was… ..investing over a year into a project, only to lose it on price. That alone was hard, but what made it even worse was losing to a competitor whose proposal didn’t even include a comparable bill of materials. Often, I was bidding the “basis of design” because I was the basis of design. Yet, sometimes, the job would be awarded to someone who cut corners on the specs, and I wasn’t even given a chance to revise my scope to match. I can tell you, even after two decades, it never got easier. For a long time, I thought it was because I wasn’t emotionally mature enough to handle it. But eventually, I realized the simple truth: it just sucks. It’s one of those aspects of sales that’s universally tough, and I believe it’s something you don’t necessarily outgrow. If you’re new to sales and struggling with this, know that you’re not alone. In my experience, you have to accept that this is one of the inherently difficult parts of the job. But here’s the silver lining: Every job has its challenges. I once read a book (I believe the title was something like Choose Your Sh*t Sandwich*) that put it perfectly: Every career comes with parts that are really tough to swallow.
