"𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀" A few years ago, I was invited to speak at an internal event where I shared insights with early-career professionals about the importance of building your internal and industry-wide network and brand. One moment that really stood out was a conversation around 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆. The room felt tense when discussing how what you do outside of work can affect your professional image. I saw their concern — 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗱. When it was my turn to speak, I decided to break the ice with an honest confession… 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀! Why? Because... ▪️ Being professional doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, whether you’re in the office or out with friends. ▪️ The teams I’ve enjoyed working with the most—where I felt the most open, honest, and productive—are the ones I had the most fun with. And many of those colleagues are still friends today. ▪️ 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀. Cara Collective, where I've been working the past year, does the work of ending both REALATIONAL and FINANCIAL poverty through transformative and sustainable employment. We train job seekers, particularly from historically marginalized communities throughout #Chicago, on the skills they'll need to be successful on the job; help our participants find work that fits their experience, goals, schedule, and financial needs; and provide them with aid from our coaching team, supportive services, and our network of employment and service providers. Unlike a temp agency, so many of which prioritize the number of job placements above all else, Cara participants don't become alumni until they make it to 1-year on the job. That means our job seekers get access to all of our resources even after they've been placed at a job. I've never worked for an organization this dedicated to social, financial, and racial equity, and I'd love to get more of my network involved in our work and our mission.
