🌱 Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) Standards Five-Star Method: Case Study 🌱 Phipps Center for Sustainable Landscape. The Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens Center for Sustainable Landscape in Pittsburgh is a great example of what following the Five-Star Method results in: An asphalt lot transformed into a highly functioning, beautiful ecosystem which supports endemic wildlife in the area and also contributes to other sustainability outcomes such as wastewater treatments and stormwater management: ☀"Prior to construction, the site selected for the Phipps Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL) was a 2.6-acre asphalt lot containing an obsolete Pittsburgh Department of Public Works storage facility and service yard. Project crews stripped the asphalt before carefully removing abandoned utility lines and vaults, and repurposing defunct underground tanks to collect spillover water from CSL’s sanitary system. The site soil was improved to support a range of ecosystems appropriate to the varying topography adjacent to the building. In addition to an extensive green roof, 1.5-acres of open meadows transitioning to oak woodlands, as well as water’s edge and wetland host over 150 species of native plants. Rain gardens planted with native species help retain and infiltrate rainwater, and the wetlands are a central component of the wastewater treatment system. The diverse plantings provide food, shelter and nesting opportunities to endemic wildlife and also help link the site’s landscape to neighboring 450-acre Schenley Park, Pittsburgh’s second-largest green space." ☀ You can learn more about SER and download the Standard using this link: https://lnkd.in/esBx8w7 #EcologicalRestoration #SER #TLC #SocietyforEcologicalRestoration

The government is investing in brownfield site regeneration to increase housing supply and revitalize urban areas. What are the potential benefits and challenges of this approach? My personal view is that we should prioritize preserving our green spaces for regenerative and traditional farming practices, leaving the natural landscape undisturbed. We can achieve this by focusing on the development of brownfield sites and making efficient use of existing urban spaces, ensuring we meet our housing needs without sacrificing valuable ecosystems. #BrownfieldDevelopment #UrbanRegeneration #HousingSupply #SustainableCities #urbansprawl

Our exciting restoration project in Southern California has been approved for expansion! 🌞 This site, known for its challenging hot climate and sodic soil conditions, posed a unique opportunity for innovation in environmental restoration. Here's a glimpse into what we've been up to: 🌞 We strategically intermixed native oaks, toyon, and willow with hybrid poplars. This mix isn't just about diversity—it's designed to create a "nurse" tree effect. The hybrid poplars, known for their rapid growth, will provide shade and protection for the slower-growing native species, aiding their establishment and growth. 🌞 To tackle the high sodicity of the soil, we incorporated specialized amendments, ensuring the optimal conditions for our plantings. Intrinsyx Environmental “eco-endophytes” played a crucial role in this restoration effort, enhancing the resilience and growth of all new plants. These beneficial microorganisms are key to promoting plant health and sustainability in challenging environments. Our goal? To not only restore this landscape but to create a thriving ecosystem that supports biodiversity and resilience against climate challenges. Yes! We want to remediate, but we can also effectively restore hard to establish native vegetation taking nature-based solutions one step further! Our environmental scientist Renee Murphy 🌱🌍 on site checking on site progress. #ecorestoration #endophytes #sustainability

What is "Landscape Rehydration" ❓ Landscape rehydration is a holistic approach to restoring the natural water cycle within a landscape by slowing down and spreading water across the land. 💦 And... what are its positive effects❓ 🌧️ Improves water cycles with revegetation 💦 Increases water retention through swales and check dams 🪱 Enhances soil health by rebuilding carbon levels 🦘 Regenerates biodiversity by improving water availability 🔥 Restores landscape resilience to extreme weather events 🤝 Engages communities in innovative landscape-rebuilding solutions One of our partners in Australia, the Mulloon Institute applies these techniques through hands-on, science-based methods like constructing physical interventions, as well as encouraging regenerative agricultural practices that improve the land's ability to absorb and retain water. The picture below shows the effects of a rehydration initiative at a farm in New South Wales. 🏞️ Do you have before and after images of the impact of your landscape? Share yours to be in the spotlight! 💫 #WaterResilience #LandscapeRestoration #droughtresilience #SoilHealth #PlanetEarth #ClimateAction

Grey to Green With the new government setting much-needed housebuilding targets, alternative approaches to development have been identified, particularly in utilising grey belt sites. Our project, Lindrick Yard, exemplifies how grey and brownfield sites can be transformed to create new high quality, low energy homes and enhance biodiversity. Our scheme includes nine new build dwellings within a landscaped masterplan, transforming the underutilised site and achieving a 33% biodiversity net gain. This is accomplished through the integration of rain gardens for water attenuation, native insect-friendly plants and trees, natural bird habitats, and ecotones. By reimagining grey belt sites, we can accelerate to a greener future whilst creating much needed homes which enhance our environment. #housing #sustainabledevelopment #biodiversity #netzerohomes #greybelt

🌿✨ Exciting news! I’m thrilled to share Part 1 of a short documentary series showcasing my thesis project, the Mawddach Coastal Botanical Garden. This garden is designed not only to promote biodiversity and sustainability but also to provide an innovative, nature-based solution for flood management in an area severely threatened by climate change. This project is more than just a garden—it’s a response to the pressing issue of rising sea levels, offering a solution to protect Fairbourne from future demolishment. The Mawddach Coastal Botanical Garden is a living, breathing plan to preserve the coastal ecosystem while honoring the sense of place that means so much to the local community. I understand the deep connection residents have to Fairbourne—the memories, the heritage, the emotional ties to a village facing potential loss. My goal is to create a space where nature and people can coexist in harmony, providing a sanctuary that both protects the land and respects the heart of this community. By working with natural systems, we can reduce flooding impacts, provide a resilient future, and, most importantly, offer hope to those who feel a sense of grief over the uncertain future of their home. In this short documentary, I invite you to take an immersive journey through this vision—explore the balance between protecting our environment and preserving the history and identity of Fairbourne. Together, we can embrace solutions that address climate change, support the community, and protect this special place for future generations. 🌊🌱 Your support means everything. Let’s take action to celebrate and protect our environment and communities in the face of these global challenges. To ensure this project is considered as a sustainable solution for Fairbourne, I invite Natural Resources Wales, the Welsh Government, the Fairbourne Moving Forward Project Board, and local councils to explore this proposal as part of the conversation around Fairbourne’s future. I hope this innovative approach can contribute to finding a balanced and sustainable way forward for the village and its people. Stay waiting for Part 2, where I will show more aspects of this garden and the vision behind it. #MawddachCoastalBotanicalGarden #ThesisProject #FloodManagement #Sustainability #Biodiversity #CommunityEngagement #ClimateAction #SenseOfPlace #Documentary #FairbourneMovingForward

Picture of the Week- The Industry- Ecology balance Rapid Urbanization also means an increase in the industrial area of the region. Our country which is a manufacturing economy depends on industries. Industries on the other hand, not just exhaust pollution to the atmosphere, but also potential heat from the industries, the sound created, the effluents released- all cause serious threats to the environment as a whole. Setting up an Urban forest nearby an industrial zone, like one of our sites ensures an ecological balance keeping level at an optimum to an extent. Urban Forest acts as a carbon sponge, ensuring carbon sequestration and improving the air quality of the region. These forests also tend to be natural noise abatement, where the noise emitted from the industry is absorbed by the forest, thus keeping the level of decibel at a minimum level. Trees are excellent coolants where they help in balancing the rising temperature of the area, through their Evo transpiration process. Trees can thus be purposefully used to help achieve the objectives of storm water management at optimal costs, which are to prevent the loss of life, to reduce property damage by runoff of severe storms, to preserve natural watercourses and their ecosystems etc., Last but not the least, Urban forests are used for recreation activities. This would serve as an active spot for Volunteering where the corporate employees and the general public can be a part of the change around them, spending time with nature in order to provide a quality service for a better tomorrow.
