Spatial computing is a catchy buzzword. But what does it look like? How are companies using it in real life? Manufacturing: Manufacturers use spatial computing to optimize efficiency. Augmented reality cut down a part of Lockheed Martin’s manufacturing process from 8 shifts to less than 1. Product Development: Designers can examine virtual renderings of a new product in its natural environment before spending to produce a prototype. Retail: Online companies like Amazon use AR to let customers see how a product will look in their home before they buy. Architecture: Architects can walk through a virtual simulation of their design before shovels break ground, checking for flow, lighting, and a million other small details. Training: Spatial computing takes the risk out of learning from trial and error. Workers can try a simulation as many times as they need to master it - and they’re 16 times more likely to remember what they learned. I recently stumbled upon a mind-blowing example of 6DOF (six degrees of freedom) volumetric video (link: https://lnkd.in/d6368Dee). And it seems I've been missing out! Turns out, this technology isn't entirely new. As early as ten years ago, Microsoft was already exploring volumetric video capture, allowing viewers to freely move within a virtual scene captured from multiple angles (link: https://lnkd.in/dB_Zfcd8). Similar efforts were underway at Google, where they're developing techniques to reduce capture time by narrowing the field of view, still offering some degree of freedom (link: https://lnkd.in/dyhuA_AF). Interestingly, some companies did already integrated this technology into entertainment products (link: https://lnkd.in/dvxPk-nD), while others are building custom rigs to experiment with lightweight volumetric video techniques (link: https://lnkd.in/dEgXka75). It appears we're approaching a sweet spot where full volumetric videos are becoming (relatively) affordable and streamable. However, there's still room for improvement. The first video, for instance, it's said to be "captured on 48 cameras and requires 6-8 minutes per frame for training. Bandwidth will be around 10gb/min." This isn't ideal for everyday consumption, but it certainly highlights the progress being made.
