The Jaguar rebrand this week has perplexed us as much as it did many others. Is there more to come? Will there be a dramatic pivot? Is it a self destruct mechanism? Time will tell. Often this kind of brand blunder exists only as a conversation within the echo chamber of design, marketing and advertising fields. But this one is different. The team at Jaguar wildly underestimated the broad and deep adoration and heritage of the brand, and what it means to so many people. When it came to Exyst, we wanted to utilize artistic visuals and a narrative-driven approach to establish an identity that could highlight their main focal points — the art and the story behind it. I see too many companies sticking with an outdated brand system, not realizing the impression they’re making—which is usually one of soullessness and obsolescence. When an established brand invests heavily in a new visual identity, it shows they are attempting to self-reflect and re-attune to the needs of their customers. Audinate is a global leader in the AV industry, and had just completed a rebrand for its Dante product when it dove into its own rebrand. The spontaneity of the new logomark is an excellent complement to its accompanying bold, obstinate wordmark, and the addition of frequency-like textures is extremely pleasing to the eye. The resulting brand system communicates harmony, ingenuity, and trustworthiness—all fitting traits for a publicly-traded audio visual company that has been advancing new technologies since its inception. The concept of brand is often misunderstood as something that comes after building the product or service. But that way of thinking defeats the whole purpose of the brand. The whole point is that it's supposed to come first - it's like styling all your rooms before you have built your house from scratch. Many businesses do the opposite.
