Last week, we had the pleasure of attending and speaking at an evening reception for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) annual marketing conference at The Washington Post headquarters. Matthew Monahan, President of Arc XP, participated in the evening panel discussion where he shared insights on maintaining and engaging your audience alongside other industry leaders from The Washington Post. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for senior communications and marketing professionals from public and land-grant universities to network, exchange best practices, and explore new ideas for improving strategic communications in higher education. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this year's CSC Summer Meeting a success!

CMDA Practice tutor and K212 health and wellbeing lecturer; Fellow of Higher Education Academy; Studying for Doctorate in Health and Social Care
Just read Garnett (2016) conceptual paper on 'A critical challenge to subject discipline structures and practices of higher education.' Some interesting thoughts on Work based learning. For our management apprenticeship programmes, they are about how we should be working with employers on meeting their organisational needs; making more explicit that they are partners; apprentices turning their tacit knowledge into explicit and the need for transdisciplinary learning for messy work situations. These has implications on how we organise our structures, processes and recognition of learning at our University. I hope to share these thoughts with my colleagues at our next Community of Practice session. 😀

This month marks the 17th anniversary of our John Hancock MLK Scholars Program, and we’re excited to welcome another outstanding group of 22 young Boston-area adults into the program. Participants, 16-18 years old, will spend their summer with us tackling meaningful job experiences right here in our corporate offices and in other community-based organizations in the city. Since its inception in 2008, our MLK Scholars Program has invested more than $16 million to provide 6,000 young adults with meaningful job experiences. One of the primary goals of the program is to level the playing field for young people who don’t have equal access to the work experiences and networks that are key to building long-term skills, self-confidence, and financial empowerment. The program provides guidance on career readiness and financial literacy to help participants grow as leaders in the office, the classroom, and the greater community. The program also benefits local nonprofit organizations that employ MLK Scholars, providing them with an opportunity to engage Boston’s diverse student population in potential career paths in their industries – with some students even returning as college interns and full-time hires after college. As we welcome another group of outstanding students this year, I can’t help but think of a quote from our program’s namesake, who once said, “the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.

🌟 **New Chapter, New Impact: Join Me in Shaping the Future of Education In November I started at Minneapolis Public Schools, where I’ll be leading the development of our pioneering Teacher Apprenticeship Program. This initiative is more than a career move; it's a personal mission to empower the next wave of educators who will inspire and shape young minds. 📚 **Why This Matters**: With years of experience in education, I've seen the gaps between academic training and real-world teaching. Our program is set to revolutionize this, offering hands-on experiences that prepare teachers not just for the classroom, but for a career of inspiring change. 💡 **Let's Collaborate and Innovate**: I believe in the power of community and shared wisdom. I'm here to exchange ideas, face challenges together, and celebrate our successes in transforming education. 🤝 **Connect and Contribute**: Whether you're an educator, an aspiring teacher, or someone passionate about education, I invite you to join this conversation. Your insights and experiences are invaluable in this collective journey. Excited to start this chapter with you all. Let's make a difference, one teacher, one student at a time! Feel free to reach out, connect, and share your thoughts.

"It’s important for public agencies, companies, community colleges, and workforce development stakeholders to come together to envision skills training and registered apprenticeship policies that will not only maximize infrastructure investments and expand benefits, but also create new pathways to good jobs for underrepresented groups including, black and brown workers, women, young people, veterans and re-entry citizens" - Victoria Johnson National Skills Coalition and Business Leaders United convened with more than 60 stakeholders who play a key role in advancing state and federal clean energy skills training policy. Aligned to our People Powered Infrastructure campaign, NSC and BLU plans to use the momentum from this event to build support for federal and state investments in pre-apprenticeships and industry sector partnerships.
