Using Google's Ngram Viewer, I traced the usage of the word "optimize" over the past 220 years. The data shows an exponential increase, particularly in the last 60 years - mapping neatly to the exponential growth in computing power over that same period. It's obvious how this technological progress has transformed our day-to-day lives. We run our lives from our phones, share with vast anonymous audiences online, and communicate instantly across the globe. But I'm most intrigued by how these tools alter our perception and consciousness - the psychological impact of their very existence. How did optimizing one's life become a symbol of progress?
