As we approach Africa Early Stage Investor Summit 2024, I'm reflecting on Mauritius' unique position in the African investment landscape. 🇲🇺🌍 Having witnessed Mauritius' role as a gateway for African investments during my private equity days, I'm convinced we can replicate this success in early-stage investing. 🚀 Since COVID-19, we've seen a surge in innovative entrepreneurs tackling real societal and environmental challenges. Yet, a critical gap remains — early-stage funding. Too many promising ventures wither due to lack of financial support. 🌱 At Mo Angels, we're proud to have nurtured entrepreneurs from their earliest days, watching them grow and make an impact. But we need more. We need policies that encourage angel investing, innovative financing instruments, and a shift in mindset 🔄💡. In this dynamic era, Mauritius has a significant opportunity to position itself as a key player in Africa's entrepreneurial ecosystem. We have the foundation to become a launchpad for innovative ventures across the continent. 🙌🏽 #AESIS2024 is an important step in this journey. It's a chance for us to learn, connect, and collaboratively address the challenges in early-stage investing. 🤝📈 #AESIS2024 #EarlyStageInvesting #MoAngels #AngelInvesting #StartupEcosystem #Innovation #Africa #Mauritius

Head of Legal and Compliance - Africa | Tax and Corporate Commercial Lawyer | Venture Capital | CatalyzU Fellow
Africa's numerous challenges are opportunities in disguise. We need courageous entrepreneurs to tackle these problems and capital allocators who can deploy funds effectively and efficiently. In this regard, I am delighted to share that I have recently completed the CatalyzU Venture Capital Advanced Fellowship! This program provided a front-row seat to learning from some of the best VC capital allocators on the continent. CatalyzU is undoubtedly shaping the next generation of non-technical industry leaders in Africa. A big thank you to Karl Nchite, Luke Mostert, Anthea Hartzenberg, Anne Gichuki and Bertran Strydom for their incredible work! The fellowship was intense but rewarding. It covered a comprehensive range of topics, including VC fundamentals, investment strategies, due diligence, impact, ESG, valuations, legal documentation, cap tables, portfolio management and exits. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Eliud Irungu and Aatish J P., where we created and pitched a hypothetical fund on demo day. Our fund’s thesis and mandate revolved around job creation for young people. Job creation and empowering youth with skills and opportunities to showcase their talent are causes close to my heart. Addressing this existential problem is crucial for Africa's future. A highlight was the impeccable quality of our lecturers: Philani Mzila CDFA (Founders Factory Africa), Jade Buckton (27four Investment Managers), Kamohelo M. and Vuyo Thulani Angoma-Mzini (Launch Africa Ventures), Thaheer M. (Savant), Brian Masondo (E Squared Investments), Mathew Saunders and Ifeoluwa (Awodein) Adepoju (Future Africa), and Nivesh Pather (Norrsken22). If you aspire to join the Young African Catalyst community stay tuned for the next round of fellowships open, including the How to Startup Series where you get to learn from some of Africa’s most seasoned entrepreneurs including Iyinoluwa Aboyeji.
