𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 ♻️ Great to see the recently released FY2024 Sustainability Reporting Suite,  from our member, New Zealand Steel via BlueScope, which includes their Sustainability Report and second Climate Action Report. This is a key part of steels story in addressing the emissions associated with steel production, and BlueScope’s progress shows how they are working towards making a difference in this space. Some of the highlights include: • Collaborating with Rio Tinto and BHP to develop Australia’s first ironmaking Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) pilot plant, known as project NeoSmelt 🔥 • Construction of the NZ Electric Arc Furnace is well underway, expected to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by approximately 55% here in Aotearoa. 🌍 • Achieving a 12% reduction in steelmaking GHG emissions and 8.4% reduction in non-steelmaking GHG emissions intensity compared to FY2018. 📉 This is a massive step toward decarbonising the steel industry, and it aligns with our shared goals to lower emissions and create a sustainable future for our sector. 🔗 Take a deep dive here: https://lnkd.in/etZ6wr5t #SustainabilityInSteel #ClimateAction #Decarbonisation #ResponsibleSteel #HERA #SustainabilityChampion #InnovationInSteel #SteelIndustry #NZSteel #GreenSteel

World’s first industrial plant that recycles CO2 emissions from steel production is underway 🏭 Currently, steel is one of the most carbon intensive (and polluting) industries on our planet. It sits right there next to oil and gas, agriculture and fashion. For every ton of steel produced, around 1.8 tonnes of CO2 is released 🏭 But decarbonisation has been a real challenge for this industry so far. Mainly due to a lack of innovative technology and complexities involved. This is about to change with low-carbon steel production. ArcelorMittal along with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and climate tech company, D-CRBN has started an industrial trial plant to test a pioneering technology that can recycle CO2 emissions from steel production. Green steel offers a viable path to decarbonising the steel and automotive industry in Europe 🚆🚙 When it comes to decarbonisation, ArcelorMittal isn’t backing away from achieving its climate targets either. The steel giant aims for 35% reduction in CO2 emissions from its European operations by 2030. It also employs a strategy of ‘smart carbon’ steelmaking — which uses circular carbon in the blast furnace, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. With these new technologies popping up, the future of green steel looks promising. In the next few years, we will see major industries adopting green steel to meet regulatory demand and boost their sustainability credentials. With sustainability at the forefront of all we do at William Hare, we are encouraged by the progress being made within our supply chain to achieve Net Zero by 2050. Our Scope 3 emissions account for more than 95% of our company’s embodied carbon emissions, so this is a major priority for us. As key contributors to SteelZero, and with a firm eye on our interim 2030 milestone, we have recently issued a questionnaire to our supply chain members to improve the granularity of our carbon data. Once received, this data will be shared with the broader SteelZero membership and undoubtedly used in the next round of carbon reporting early in the new year. #steelmakers globally are beginning to take steps to decarbonise and low emissions steel options are emerging on the market. But new analysis from #ResponsibleSteel demonstrates that radical shifts to reduce emissions by a select number of industry leaders or “first movers” will not be sufficient. The entire steel industry needs to take immediate action to make progress on the journey to net zero. And this progress needs to be mapped out in a universal language. ResponsibleSteel unveiled a landmark report in July, "Charting Progress to 1.5°C through Certification."
