Our partner CeNTI - Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials has achieved significant milestones in Pilot Line 7! One of the main accomplishments was the successful #upscaling of the bio-silica extraction process from rice husk, from lab scale up to a 100 litre reaction scale. This pilot scale process reached close to the theoretical maximum yield, resulting in the production of approximately 1 kg of bio-silica per batch. The #chemical and #morphological analysis of the upscaled material confirmed the #reproducibility and #efficiency of the process. Another key breakthrough was also achieved with the modification of the bio-silica to obtain different properties, specifically hydrophobicity, flame retardancy and antimicrobial activity. The process was efficiently scaled up, leading to a 60-fold increase in the production of these modified nanoparticles. For the hydrophobic #silica, comparative analyses show that the chemical structure and water repellency of the upscaled particles match their lab-scale counterparts. This enhanced #hydrophobicity of the bio-silica opens new possibilities for its incorporation in advanced bio-based #materials. Additionally, the flame-retardant and #antimicrobial silica particles have also exhibited effective antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Watch the video and see how this BIOMAT Pilot Line operates!
