Stonehenge and Avebury the island possesses the finest prehistoric monuments in Europe. Stonehenge is the more familiar and sensational, often described and painted, as in Turner's and Constable's watercolours. The subtlety and complexity of this extraordinary monument preclude detailed description here. It was being built and reshaped during three distinct periods over several hundred years, longer than was the case with most medieval cathedrals, though during its successive transformations the main axis always remained aligned to midsummer sunrise. The last stage in its shaping seems to have been about 1900 to 1500 BC, when *a pitch of architectural refinement was achieved unparalleled in the prehistoric West'. These huge stones have almost imperceptible swelling like Greek columns, the architrave curves inward to make a circle, the laterals are morticed and tenoned to fit the uprights and shaped to the perspective from the ground. An inner circle was formed of bluestones brought all the way - 200 miles - from Wales. All around are the cemeteries of these people, some three hundred barrows; a long avenue of stones went down to a stream. Very happy for my new article "A reversal from hi-tech to authenticity: the case of fire safety for cathedral roofs in France" for Materiali e Strutture nsXIII (25) , a quite diverse endeavour from what I have been doing so far https://lnkd.in/echsjiWf In summary: The destruction of the original roof in Notre-Dame of Paris in 2019 triggered a programme of holistic fire protection in the roofs of all 87 cathedrals in France, which is reviewed here in the ongoing projects for Paris and Soissons. The programme is framed in the repair approaches after several catastrophic fires that have continuously destroyed Cathedral timber roofs in France since the 1820s. In line with their designation as Monuments Historiques from the 1870s, the philosophy and practice of the subsequent conservation works showed a constant adaptation of contemporary techniques (steel or concrete frames) and a pre-occupation with the visual impact of the restored roofs (externally at urban scale and making the underlying vaults visible internally). The dramatic events in Notre-Dame produced the «Sécurité Cathédrales» Plan and a major project has been the fire protection of the roof in Soissons Cathedral, restored 100 years earlier after its partial destruction during the Great War. The review of the project exemplifies the efforts of the Plan towards holistic and comprehensive fire safety (partitions, replacements, strengthening). While there is doubt the Notre-Dame scientific approach would be applied in future cases to the same scale, the historic trend shows a return to timber material systems. This is most likely to be enhanced by high technical expertise available in France, and centralisation of intervention philosophies due to the state ownership of these emblematic structures.

And so was most of Boston.
