Introducing this project on an Arrernte sacred site (Women’s Site) in the heart of Central Australia (Alice Springs) is a direct insult to the Mparntwe Traditional Custodians. While we acknowledge the perspectives of those who view tourism and commercial interests as beneficial, prioritising these over a site of profound spiritual significance, which has been sacred to the Arrernte people for thousands of years, is deeply troubling. Once again, we are witnessing the disregard of a culturally significant site in favour of external gains, undermining the preservation of an ancestral heritage that has shaped this land for millennia. This issue transcends economic interests; it is about safeguarding the heritage of the world’s oldest living culture for future generations. Is this a new movement by Indigenous interests that places commercial opportunities and gains above our cultural rights as the First Peoples of this nation? Traditional Custodian.

I grew up getting strange comments from older family members who would liken my body to that of Saartjie Baartman. And not the simple appearance of it, but the object of her body, almost to ridicule that shape- the shape of African women. The story of Saartjie Baartman is tragic not only because of the extent of her exploitation and objectification, but that these exploitative dehumanizing colonial perspectives on African subjectivity have found continuity into the 20th and 21st centuries. My research on photographic archives has been a pathway to a deeper interrogation of these subjectivities. From the advent of the photographic medium in Africa, to it's pervasion as an ethnographic tool, and then a means of highlighting the spectacular violence that African and other oppressed peoples have been subjected to, photography has played a significant role in showing us how these dehumanizing gazes have been formalized. This article is such a necessary historical refresher. It is also a much welcome resuscitation of our collective outrage towards what Saartjie Baartman was subjected to. We should never ever forget what she was subjected to. This outrage is what opens our eyes up to the dangers of curating, exhibiting, writing, documenting with no apathy or critical thought. There's a nuance to how the article reflects on Saartjie's supposed agency (or lack thereof) in her enslavement and exploitation. I hope to think and write about these nuances one day. I mean, what do we do with those supposed moments of defiance? What do we do with the ambiguities of consent in colonial contexts? The work we do in cultural institutions, as both knowledge production and cultural expression, will always be tethered to these tragic colonial histories. The ambiguities and silences inherent in what was written by White scholars is perhaps exactly where we should be starting our work. To reflect on them is to continually remind ourselves of how diligent we need to be in restoring our collective dignity. Awesome read. Cudos to the writers.
From her exploitation in 19th-century Europe to the enduring impacts on beauty standards today, Saartjie Baartman's tragic story challenges us to confront the ongoing legacy of colonisation and exploitation. As art does not generate any cash flow, its value is solely determined by demand and supply. One important aspect affecting demand is an artwork’s provenance. Having been part of a high-profile collection oftentimes has a positive impact on an artwork’s demand and therefore price. The De La Cruz collection that is going to auction now is a good example. Will these paintings trade at a premium due to their strong provenance? We will know soon… #diversification #alternativeassets #artinvestment #artinvesting

I hosted an emerging collector's event for #FriezeLA with emerging art development agency GOLIATH. Goliath Art Development Group is a multidisciplinary art agency, specializing in artist representation, commercial partnerships, and advisory services. Goliath is the conduit between functions. Forming new ways of working within the traditional makeup of the industry. We had a great conversation on the culture of collecting, investment vs custodian, the roles of art professionals and how fairs and shows provide a platform for education & exploration. Some takeaways from the conversation were: - From a collector: "I really buy what speaks to me, less so from a strict monetary standpoint, I want to connect with the artists i invest in on a personal, cultural level" - From a collector: "Fairs are my main point of entry into the Art world" - From a collector: "I prefer working 1-1 with an artist but I understand sometimes that's unrealistic, in those cases I wish i knew more advisors to direct my investments" - From a gallerist: "Watch what blue chip galleries are opening and showing, try to get in early and buy a small piece, knowing that there is a larger machine supporting the artist" - From an artist: "There's a gap in nurturing talent, I want to expand the my artistic output into products but need an assist in strategy that can help support my entire ecosystem" https://lnkd.in/g7ktBG5q

We took an outing today. Come with us to the London Art Fair. This fair is quite exciting for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s the inaugural art event of the new year, effectively reviving the art market. The galleries are showcasing works from prominent artists and reflecting the latest trends from the previous year. However, the standout feature is undoubtedly the impressive prints that are on display. This is particularly significant as it offers a more accessible entry point into the art market for new collectors. The print market is a dynamic segment of the art market that is rapidly gaining popularity, positioning it as a sector to watch closely in 2024.
We attended the Preview Day of the London Art Fair excited to see its first prints & editions section, featuring galleries that focus on limited editions. A fantastic addition to the show, nurturing collectors who want to grow their portfolios and host big brand names on their walls. We spoke to Adrian Hill Fine Art & Stow Art House about the prints in their booths. Our Market Editor Sheena Carrington commented on the popular featuring of Hockney’s across the fair, and rare colourway Warhol’s at Tanya Baxter Contemporary.
