Bumblebees and many other species are critically important as pollinators, not just for humans and the products that we rely on daily, but for other species as well. Without them, the world will become very different. This raises an interesting point about data and evidence or what constitutes scientific proof. I was trained as anthropologist, but I also spent time in Arkansas working on an archeological dig unearthing a village that had last been occupied about the time the first diseases were brought to the Americas by European explorers. Most of the population of indigenous peoples in the Americas died without ever seeing any of the people that brought the diseases. In archeology, there is a term that is used to describe the gathering of any evidence you can before it is destroyed by construction of a building, a road, etc. The term is “salvage” archeology. Some days it feels to me that we are trying to document what we are losing, a salvage climate change if you will, rather than what we should be doing: anticipating what is coming down the pike. Put another way, it is like we are trying to drive a car by looking in the rearview mirror, using data that is already old to make decisions. Think about it. https://lnkd.in/em5asntW

"...is investigating archaeological sites with solid geological contexts that are accurately dated. Only rigorously investigated sites using the best practices of archaeology, geoarchaeology, and geochronology will provide the primary and pivotal data to interpret the past." - Michael Waters (2019: 365) Listen to Mike. Trust me, I did both graduate degrees with him. Yes, he put up with me. 😉 #yearofgeoarchaeology #SAA2024 #SAA2025 #culturalheritage #STP #societyforamericanarchaeology #geoarchaeology #deeptesting #ACRA #geoarchaeologist #culturalresources #SHPO #THPO #archaeology #crm #coring #geoprobe #floodplains #fluvial #alluvialterraces #paleosols #river #geomorphology #rivers #fluvialgeomorphology #stratigraphy #fluvial #colluvial #buriedAhorizons #alluvial #glacial #eolian #coastal #gsa #societyforamericanarchaeology #geomorphic #paleolandscapes #probabilitymodeling #predictivemodeling #OSL #micromorphology #radiocarbon #geoprobe #geotechnical #geotechnicalinvestigation #drilling #drillingrig

Never give up. That's critical. Be a warrior for archaeology. You know it's too important. That story of our human past, can be lost forever. All too easily. Forge ahead. No one said it would be easy. Micro-Climate Blog #18! which shares the power of community archaeology to link past and present, people living now with the land around them and all who have come before. As we take in the results of the US election and what it will mean for action on climate, raising up those who are strengthening connections between communities and their local environments feels like one of the most important things I - and we - can do.
New in our Micro-Climate Blog Series from Marcy Rockman! Community archaeology is more than just digging up the past. It's about connecting with the land and the people who have lived there. The Xwe’etay/Lasqueti Archaeology Project in British Columbia is a great example of how this practice brings communities together.
