Even LEED projects need to have a defined boundary that confirms what IS in the scope of work and what is NOT. Often the LEED boundary for a project is simply the property line, but not always and not always for all credits. Anusha Shah, President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), champions a "nature and people positive" approach to infrastructure. With 30% of biodiversity loss linked to construction, she calls for a shift in how, why, and where we build. By fostering cross-sector collaboration, engaging communities, and co-designing resilient solutions, the construction sector can address both the climate and biodiversity crises. This is one of many forward-thinking perspectives featured in the series, driving change toward a greener, more sustainable future. Explore the series and join the conversation about building for nature, guided by the leaders shaping a more sustainable and nature-focused construction industry, in The Nature of Building: Biodiversity & the Built Environment, our digital series with The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g9XxqBGQ 🎤 Featuring: Prof. (Dr) Anusha Shah #TheNatureOfBuilding #NaturePositive #SustainableInfrastructure #GreenConstruction #EcologicalDesign #BuildingForResilience 🎥: Content With Purpose

🌍 As we work towards a sustainable future, it is important to recognise the role construction plays in climate change. 🌍 Nearly 40% of global energy related emissions come from buildings and construction. In modern buildings, half of these emissions are due to embodied carbon, with two-thirds of that coming from the structure itself. With such a significant impact, it is crucial that we, as structural engineers, play our part in reducing global emissions. What does our contribution look like? At Endesign Consultants, we focus on designing lean structures, utilising sustainable materials and advising our clients on energy efficient construction methods. By integrating these practices, we aim to reduce embodied carbon and support our clients in building sustainably. To further this, we also provide our clients with estimated embodied carbon calculations for their proposals, helping them make informed choices toward sustainability. Our goal is to make a meaningful impact on lowering carbon emissions and aligning with global climate goals. Let's build a sustainable future together. #Sustainability #SustainableConstruction #SustainableDesign #EmbodiedCarbon #ClimateAction #EngineeringForTheFuture #GreenBuilding #NetZero #StructuralEngineering #IStructE

On Wednesday September 18th, a week ahead of Climate Week, I’m joining the “Decarbonizing Construction: Innovations and Strategies in Reducing Embodied Carbon” webinar as a moderator, with all-star panelists Katie Poss, Jacob Dunn, and Tolga Tutar. For the design and construction industry, embodied carbon remains a significant challenge, as the built environment accounts for nearly 40 percent of carbon emissions globally, with 11 percent embodied in construction materials and 28 percent stemming from building operations. Join us for a virtual discussion on innovative technologies and strategies in decarbonizing the construction material supply chain, and what experts hope for the future. 🌍 UK Engineering Firms Launch Reuse-Focused Collective Big news today! Six top UK engineering firms have come together to create The Engineers Reuse Collective, focusing on accelerating reuse in the built environment. This not-for-profit group aims to support the UK's construction industry in moving towards net zero carbon 🌱. The initiative is led by Andy Yates, a former director of Webb Yates Engineers. The founding members include Civic Engineers, Buro Happold, Elliott Wood, Heyne Tillett Steel, Webb Yates Engineers, and Whitby Wood, with support from the Institution of Structural Engineers. According to the UK Green Building Council, the built environment contributes about 25% of the UK's carbon emissions. Addressing this through reuse could make a significant impact on our carbon footprint. The collective's goals are clear: ✅ Promoting information sharing and engagement on reuse. ✅ Challenging and championing clients to maximise reuse on projects. ✅ Advocating for faster change and influencing future policy. I was delighted to have been a part of the ReBuild Conference last week! At the ReBuild Conference, I had the privilege of participating in a panel moderated by chad edwards RA, NCARB, LEED AP, LFA with fellow panelists Shannan Plogsted and Ted Christian, AIA, NCARB. We discussed practical difficulties and challenges within commercial real estate design, construction, and long-term operations. Our goal in discussing these obstacles was to offer architects insight on how to improve the overall design process. As an energy engineering consultant, I pointed out that if architects prioritize energy efficiency in building design, it is very important to ensure energy engineering consultants are involved in the initial planning phases, clear communication is paramount, and integrative input from all stakeholders is important, particularly from facility managers. I believe that smart strategies for achieving net zero or an aggressive sustainability goal begin with great dialogue such as this one. A special thanks to the REBUILD Conference and chad edwards RA, NCARB, LEED AP, LFA with emersion DESIGN LLC for inviting me to participate. #ReBuildConference #Construction #DesignProcess #Sustainability #NetZero #Communication #Stakeholders #Architects #EnergyEfficiency
