🌿🏡 On the drawing board this week is a beautiful period home in South Cumbria! 🏡🌿 Our client's brief was to design a garden room with large expanses of glass, which would flood the space with natural light and offer uninterrupted views of their beautiful garden. By also incorporating a green roof, the design blurs the line between indoors and out. Why use a green roof? 🌿 Eco-friendly insulation: It helps regulate temperatures, keeping your room cozy in winter and cool in summer. 🌿 Storm water management: Absorbs rainwater, reducing runoff and protecting local ecosystems. 🌿 Biodiversity boost: Provides a haven for pollinators and other wildlife. 🌿 Aesthetic appeal: A lush green roof complements your garden, blending seamlessly into the landscape. Imagine stepping onto a rooftop that bursts with a mosaic of greenery, flowering plants, and even small trees, creating a serene oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. 🌳 The aesthetic appeal of green roofs lies in their ability to blend natural beauty with urban architecture, providing a refreshing contrast to the concrete and steel surroundings. 🏙️ These green spaces offer a visual feast throughout the year, with seasonal changes bringing different colors and textures. In spring and summer, bright blossoms and verdant foliage create a lively and inviting atmosphere. 🌸 Autumn introduces warm hues of red, orange, and yellow, while winter's hardy plants add a touch of greenery against the backdrop of snow or the city's wintery grey. 🍂 Designed to reflect a variety of styles, from wild, meadow-like expanses to meticulously curated gardens with walking paths, seating areas, and even water features. This versatility allows architects and designers to craft unique, aesthetically pleasing spaces that enhance the overall look and feel of urban environments. 🌷 But, of course, beyond their beauty, green roofs offer numerous benefits from regulating building temperatures to managing stormwater, improving air quality, and promoting biodiversity. They not only elevate the visual appeal of cities but also provide practical environmental benefits, making them a valuable and beautiful addition to urban life. 🌿 Green up the roofs, the cities, the world! 🌎💚 #greenroofs #plants #sustainability #architecture

Mystic Mayappott - This is one of the initial projects of the firm that, to this day, fetches us clients. Built as a private plantation bungalow, Mystic Mayappott started functioning as a three room resort in 2004. In 2021, it underwent a renovation, adding two more rooms. The site was unique in that it made one constantly mindful of the power of Nature. Our effort was merely to not diminish this experience with the design of our structure. But in order to create an architecture that’s subtle and merging, we had to come up with a design approach that was bold and unconventional. Because the architectural design process was strongly guided by the natural elements on site like the stream, the huge boulders, large trees etc., execution of the project had to take a non-traditional approach. Spaces and functions were accommodated within the boundaries already set by Nature. The plan of the spaces was drawn on site first and this was later transferred to the drawing board for detailing. Instead of cutting down Nature to accommodate the functions, we accepted the restraints and planned the functions around them. Due to this, we have rocks sticking out here and there inside the house, some rooms have rocks as walls, the house itself splits in three parts by the stream and the boulder; existing trees are accommodated in courtyards. Special attention is given to the planting palette so that the space does not feel ‘planted’. Native endemic species are carefully chosen as starters and then Nature was allowed to take it further, which she has happily obliged. #Design #Architecture #PrakrtiPaushtika #ArchitecturalJourney #MysticMayapott

Searching for some inspiration to spruce up your space in 2024? Look no further! We've got all the insider tips straight from the top renovation experts. Check out what they're buzzing about for this year! 9️⃣ Integrating the garden into a building's architecture Discover an exciting trend for nature lovers: physically connecting the garden with the fabric of the building. Depending on your budget, there are various ways to achieve this. One simple method is integrating planters or raised beds into a building's external cladding or using the same materials. This not only adds greenery but also creates a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors. Another option is to add a green roof system covered in meadow grass to your kitchen extension or to include a reflecting pool near the rear of your property. These ideas not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home but also create a harmonious connection with nature. 🌿🏡 #londonconstruction #homerefurbishment #londonproperty #londonrenovation #londonhome #bespokejoinery

I believe the most enjoyable aspect of landscape design lies in the intricate process of planning and selecting plants that thrive together, creating a harmonious balance. It's like painting with nature's palette, carefully choosing each plant to ensure they complement one another and flourish in their environment. The challenge of finding the right combinations and envisioning how they'll interact over time adds an element of excitement and creativity to the design process. This thoughtful planning not only enhances the beauty of the space but also promotes sustainability and resilience. In the end, witnessing the vibrant, balanced garden come to life is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. One of the most important principles of xeriscape design is plant selection. It's crucial to emphasize that a water-conserving landscape can be both colorful and beautiful, extending beyond cacti alone. By carefully choosing a variety of water-efficient plants, a xeriscape garden can thrive with a rich palette of vibrant colors. Graceful ornamental grasses add texture and movement, while drought-tolerant flowers bring the landscape to life with their vivid petals. Striking succulents showcase their unique shapes and hues, while native shrubs and trees offer structure and shade. Through thoughtful planning and a diverse selection of plant species, a xeriscape garden can transform into a delightful oasis of color and beauty, all while conserving water and celebrating the remarkable diversity found in nature. A well-designed front yard stands as an elegant introduction to your home, not merely as a patch of grass. While a luscious lawn has long been the typical approach, it often lacks character and can require disproportionate effort for little aesthetic benefit. Instead, consider how your landscape can reflect the architectural identity of your home, creating a harmonious relationship between structure and nature. Strict adherence to conventional landscaping may overlook the profound emotional impact a thoughtfully curated outdoor space can provide. When every element is purposefully selected, it fosters an inviting atmosphere, inviting you to engage with your property on a deeper level. As an alternative, prioritize design principles that resonate with both your individual style and the essence of your dwelling. This involves crafting patterns of circulation that enhance accessibility while incorporating plantings and features that reflect the nuances of your home's architecture. However, it's essential to remain aware of the limitations of singular approaches. Overly rigid designs can sometimes become restrictive, stifling creativity and personalization. The ideal solution? Marry the concepts of tradition with innovation. Embrace the classic principles of landscape design while allowing for unique touches that express your personal vision. Begin by evaluating the architecture of your home and researching compatible landscaping styles. Then, sketch out an integrated design that respects both functional circulation and aesthetic beauty. Use plants that thrive in your specific microclimate, ensuring longevity and vibrancy in your outdoor space. Let your front yard not only enhance curb appeal but also uplift your daily experience—an inviting haven waiting to welcome you home after a long day. 🌿🏡✨ #FrontYardGoals #LandscapingDesign #LuxuryOutdoors #CurbAppeal #SmithBrothersLandscape
