On the Island of Lombok, within the Lesser Sunda Islands, in the West Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, a fourplex built with locally sourced materials, overlooks the ocean. The individual cabins, each have their own unique views of the natural environment, while also maintaining a level of privacy and serenity within the compound. The island, is home to the Muslim society of the Sasak ethnic group, who have a traditional building method for their homes. This project, in respect to local culture, utilizes this construction method, which primarily utilizes timber construction. The structural timber, as well as the facade timber, are sourced from the island itself. Golden Teak Wood, is grown in a garden on the island, which provides material for the inhabitants of the islands homes. The native teak wood, is a resilient material that goes through a unique charring method, to further increase its resilience. Utilizing local materials and structural techniques, that are unique to their climate zones, is a form of sustainability, that is respective of local culture, as well as less disruptive than contemporary construction methods. It is incredibly important that we maintain the historical and cultural significance of our environments as we continue to advance technologically. This project, will hopefully act as an example of a way to successfully achieve this. Katajanokan Laituri, a new wooden building in the heart of Helsinki, stands as a testament to sustainable architecture. Designed by Anttinen Oiva Architects, this building incorporates innovative construction methods, providing insights that are particularly relevant for architects, interior designers, and landscape architects. Located beside Helsinki's Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, Katajanokan Laituri is home to the head office of Stora Enso, a Finnish forest industry company, and Solo Sokos Hotel Pier 4, which aims to be Finland's most sustainable hotel. Amazingly innovative new washbasin concept from Singapore Architect Singapore's architectural finishes have demonstrated a remarkable emphasis on sustainability and the incorporation of natural elements into urban design. The emphasis on landscapes incorporated into high-rise structures, as well as the significance of green architecture and natural ventilation to deal with the humid environment of the area, define Singapore's current architecture. One prominent example is the Heatherwick Studio-designed Learning Hub at Nanyang Technological University, which has emerged as a new educational icon for the city1.
