Almost 10 years ago, Professor Carlos Moreno coined the term 🕒 15-Minute City at the Paris #COP21 Conference, explaining that everyday destinations like schools, stores, and offices should only be a short walk or bike ride away from home. This idea appealed to Paris' Mayor, Anne Hidalgo who called him to be a scientific advisor and help for the French capital to embrace the concept of proximity in Hidalgo's election campaign and policy. Then, there was a cascade of adopters. Hundreds of mayors worldwide have already embraced the concept as a way to help recover from the pandemic, and the idea continues to gain speed. 🌍 The Forum of Mayors 2024 reaffirmed the vital role cities play in advancing inclusive and renewed multilateralism! 🌍   At the Forum of Mayors, themed "Cities Summit of the Future", city leaders exchanged concrete experiences on localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), financing for development, and addressing urban challenges. 🚄🏙 On my way to the Federal Congress on #UrbanDevelopmentPolicy in #Heidelberg! The theme of this 17th congress is ”Cooperation in urban development - alliances for the common good”   🤝🌏 This motto resonates deeply with me. In today’s world, where rapid urbanization, climate change, and social conflicts are pressing concerns, international cooperation has never been more critical.   💬💡It is imperative that we share knowledge, expertise, and best practices, learning from one another as we seek to build cities that are not only prosperous but also #equitable, #green, and #resilient. The focus lies on resilient neighborhoods and social housing and is based on results of this year's #UkraineRecoveryConference in Berlin. Cities will be at the forefront of Europe’s efforts for green transition in the coming months. Poland is currently holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union and is emphasizing the importance of local and regional levels in achieving the objectives of sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience. Poland will also host several major events on urban policy, including the URBACT City Festival in Wroclaw in April, the Urban Future Global Conference in Lodz in May, and the CITIES Forum in Krakow in June. Practitioners and elected representatives from across Europe will present innovative practices and solutions, fostering debate on how the urban levels can play a crucial role in making Europe more sustainable and resilient. 🚀 **Bring the City Back! 🌆** What if we placed city priorities at the heart of urban development? This thought-provoking question led me to the **Eurocities Pulse Mayors Survey 2024**. The insights found here (https://lnkd.in/d6PRWjKi) sparked my curiosity about the priorities of Mayors in the Western Balkans. According to the survey, European Mayors are focusing on **climate action**, **social inclusion**, and **affordable housing**. Tackling these issues isn't just a local effort; it requires securing additional resources from the EU and national governments, enhancing innovation capacity, and fostering collaboration with national authorities. Mayors see the EU's role as pivotal in supporting urban initiatives and sustainable development partnerships. There's an urgent need for tools and resources to overcome challenges related to housing, meet climate goals, and advance digital transformation—always with a focus on social inclusion. 🌍💡 What are your thoughts? ⚡ City-to-city diplomacy is taking the world by storm! From November 4-5, the EU-funded IURC III North America program brought together 14 cities across the EU, USA, and Canada to focus on Innovative Urban Planning. Held alongside the 2024 Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, the event facilitated collaboration on shared urban challenges through meetings, presentations, and site visits to innovative affordable housing projects around the city. Highlights include: - Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB): Shared social housing projects that are flexible and sustainable in the long term. - Anci Lazio Rome: Presented progress on new social housing rules involving local stakeholders. - City of Calgary: Introduced their “Home is Here” plan to increase affordable housing. - New York City: Highlighted the PACT program, aimed at rehabilitating thousands of housing units. - City of Toronto: Discussed modular housing initiatives and new rules to make housing development more efficient. - Hamburger Senat: Showcased how they use urban data and AI for better governance in an ethical way. - City of Nanaimo: Focused on enhancing the building permit process to expedite construction. - Dublin City Council: Shared insights on long-term data collection to help with better community planning. - Innovative Sofia, Sofia Municipality: Stressed the need for better data integration.
