I hope this adds to the conversation. Recently, the Chief Scientist of Australia, Dr Cathy Foley, lamented the nation’s research sector as “not fit for purpose” and chasing rankings rather than quality in a significant criticism from the industry (The Guardian 2023). The chart below is not great news for Australian CM Academics. ABS, in 2022, asked the construction industry, "Who is your source of (new) ideas?" Universities and their teachers/researchers were less than 1%. This is the motivation for change in Australian Universities. Given the significant amount spent on research, the value is not apparent (in new ideas and products). We are making a concerted effort to produce short-term and long-term value to external parties. The Australian Universities Accord - Final Report has been published and is a road map to take back our proper role in raising the quality of life and value to industry in Australia.

A snapshot of CEs in the UK public sector It may interest you to see the results of a review of Senior public servants in the UK. Here are a few points: 74% of all CEs (called permanent secretaries) went to Oxford or Cambridge universities. 23% have a science, engineering or mathematics degree compared with 44% of the general population. Almost half of permanent secretaries and directors general (DGs) are initially externally recruited (45%). A lower 16% entered their current role from outside the civil service. Up and down the land (well, a big chunk of the land) we ought to be debating this in proper forums. They are often filled with jargon and assume the civil service’s grade structure is self-evident, failing to clearly explain the level of responsibility a job entails. They don’t explain who candidates will work with and what they will learn as a result, nor do they frame the civil service as a talent-dense environment. Some roles are still only advertised on GOV.UK".
