Let's take a moment to celebrate an insightful article by Sam Frew on the modern reinterpretation of the Mashrabiya - a timeless architectural element known for its blend of tradition and functionality. At i-Mesh, we’ve drawn inspiration from such iconic concepts, particularly in our work on the folding sun shading for the Expo 2020 promenade in Expo City. Our folding sunshade was meticulously designed by Werner Sobek, renowned for their expertise in creating innovative architectural solutions. They leveraged i-Mesh’s advanced filament placement technology to address extreme climatic conditions and mitigate urban heating effects. This design not only enhances the microclimate but also reduces CO₂ emissions. Emphasizing minimalism and respect for resources, the structure integrates seamlessly with the urban environment and local traditions, aiming to create a calming backdrop rather than making a dominant statement. The canopies are highly reflective, providing effective shade while minimizing aesthetic and environmental impact. The perfect merge between story telling, tradition and technical performances, was then achieved by the use as pattern of one of the most specific local drawings of this area being exactly inspired by the traditional Mashrabiya - a historic feature known for its privacy and ventilation benefits - that permitted to modernizes the design concept through advanced technology. This approach combines the elegance of traditional design with contemporary sustainability and efficiency needs.
