Overlooking the much-loved South Park Gardens in Wimbledon, an Edwardian house has been transformed by Matthew Giles Architects in every possible way. Through a tactile and warm approach to massing and architectural detailing, this bold yet quietly resolving family home now enhances the character of the street and is a contemporary equivalent to the traditional brick homes along Kings Road. https://lnkd.in/eikrNNRc

https://lnkd.in/d_4zA4V3 Faced with the demands of compactness and profitability, balconies are the driving force behind architectural form! I wonder what role these extensions play in terms of thermal protection and quality of use!

Duo Dickinson on architecture, decoration and symbolism: "While mass timber is being built in northern Europe and the U.S. as a viable alternative to mid rise urban structures, here its use is aesthetic, a neat showpiece as the rest of this building (shorter than many of the other actual mass timber buildings) is built as a standard steel-and-concrete building." https://lnkd.in/dtbRgv4Y

HOME ON LEOPARD ST Rarely do architects get the chance to create history. AB Wilson, the original architect of Home, had that opportunity over a century ago. Unfortunately, time had left the house in a state of collapse, risking the loss of an important piece of architectural history. Our challenge was not just to restore Home, but to revitalise it for today while honouring its original design. Adapting a century-old layout to modern needs presented hurdles, such as converting six small bedrooms into more practical spaces, integrating modern amenities like extra bathrooms and a larger kitchen, and salvaging irreplaceable old timber, which required extensive technical research. A huge thank you to our expert collaborators David Gole of Conrad Gargett and Andrew Brierley of Chapman Builders. Ultimately, the restoration of Home is a triumph of preservation and innovation, safeguarding its architectural legacy while embracing 21st-century advancements. Join us in tuning into ABC 23 May at 8pm to catch Restoration Australia’s Anthony Burke walk with the owners Steve and Jane Wilson through the process of restoring Home. In the village of Akhaldaba, located in the Borjomi Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia, a single-family home has been designed to become a part of the natural environment within which it resides. Built into the hillside, the architects wanted to design a space that followed the contours of the land, giving the appearance of the home being merely an extension of it, while disturbing the land as minimally as possible. Strategically designed and placed expansive windows, allow for an abundance of natural sunlight to illuminate the interior spaces, while also providing views of the surrounding natural environment. The floor to ceiling openings give the feeling of being able to walk right into nature, creating a strong connection between the built and natural environment. Placement of the home within the hillside allows for it to benefit from thermal regulation from the earth, reducing the overall energy needs. Built primarily of concrete, the facades of the structure that are exposed, have been designed so that vegetation can grow up and around them, enveloping them in greenery, further becoming a part of the natural environment. The home is a strong example of how design can work to compliment and enhance its natural environment.
