This is the front elevation of a residential building, designed by our office anod architecture at Polygono hill, Athens Small dimensions of the plot set from the beginning an interesting challenge during the design process. Natural light enters in the spaces only from the narrow front – North elevation – of Geranion street, with a width of 8.00m and the back –South elevation– of corresponding width, with unobstructed views towards the Saronic Gulf. The absence of balconies on the North elevation was a synthetic decision. This is in contrast to the small balconies that are usually present in older buildings in the narrow streets of Athens. While the unparalleled view from the South elevation towards the Saronic, led us to design large openings and balconies. DEF_Studio/ Materials - Cedar Cladding We’re constantly looking for new and unique ways to use natural materials. From our Scandinavian influence, timber cladding has played a large role in our earlier schemes. Not only highly sustainable when used correctly but also provides the ability to connect the building to natural landscapes. Here is a glimpse of several projects using cedar cladding in different methods. 1. Farmstead House: 92mm cedar open joint cladding with a natural and UV stain to create a slightly ‘silvered’ effect. This photo also shows the combination with oak linings and cedar shingled roof. 2. Blue Hayes: An alternative method using 125mm Tongue and Groove jointed planks. Coupled into groups of three, a 25mm gap has then been introduced to create the effect of large format panels being used on the facades. Slightly unorthodox however creates a striking panelled appearance. 3. The Orchard: 50mm wide planks with a shadow gap introduced at low level to create a ‘plinth’ for the building whilst utilising standard lengths of timber. 4: Feature Window Reveals and Insets: 5. Cedar soffits returning from cladding: A clever drip was added to the corner allowing water to run off and prevent tracking back onto the soffit planks. Rosepark Towns- Post number 2- Transitional Architecture This development sits in the middle of a neighborhood, which is quite different when a higher density design is introduced at the edge of a neighborhood or within a higher density designation. Therefore, extra attention had to be given to the architecture to make sure that the result did not clash with the surrounding context, or would look out of place. The intention behind the design of this development was to create an architecture which was transitional.  A contemporary concept which also pays tribute to the traditional architecture prevalent in the area. Red brick was chosen as the main building element to harmonize with the red brick that is existing in the neighborhood. Sloped roofs were introduced again to pay tribute to the existing roof styles in the area. French style windows were also considered for the same reason. These were the main traditional elements. Now to introduce contemporary elements, the roof material was upgraded to standing seam metal roof, versus regular shingles. The windows were made bigger, to increase the ratio of openings to solid walls. The window mullions are colored black to differ from the traditional white mullions in the area. Wood patterned cladding is also introduced in the recessed areas above the doors, which vertically break the horizontal continuity of brick.

𝗔 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗔 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝘆 🐛 When executed correctly, a little can go a long way when it comes to the exterior design of buildings. Even the small addition of a bold or complementary color can transform a building's appearance, making it more vibrant and attractive. In this example, incorporating a couple contrasting materials, such as a few strips of Longboard, can add depth and texture. These minimal interventions can create a modern, dynamic facade without the need for extensive and costly renovations. #manufacturing #construction #architecture

A contemporary take on Post-War architecture to engage a challenging site with its neighbours to deliver 9 new homes and a planning success We are so pleased to be granted planning permission at the Hounslow planning committee last night for 9 houses on a challenging narrow strip of land set between a row of garages and railway line in Isleworth. What seemed at first like an un-developable site because of the awkward shape and the constraints, will now play host 9 family homes set along a shared mews-like road. We worked closely with the planning officers to develop a spatial strategy for the site that would allow the houses to engage with the surrounding Area of Special Character, whilst passively mitigating against the noise and vibrations from the railway line. The houses are arranged as semi-detached properties set perpendicular to the railway line so that they predominantly look out to the private and communal amenity spaces at the front and rear. The side elevations overlooking the existing suburban estate are animated with windows and chimneys that reference the post war architecture of the estate.
