As with most Recruiters and Headhunters, I speak with an absurd amount of Companies, hiring managers and decision makers across the United States, and I'm hearing the same things: The construction industry is facing some serious hiring challenges right now. The shortage of skilled labor is more acute than ever, especially with many experienced workers retiring and fewer young professionals entering the field. This gap is particularly tough in both trades, like carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work - As well as Senior Management, like Project Managers. To attract talent, companies are increasing wages and offering better benefits, but this comes with rising operational costs. Additionally, the rapid pace of technological advancement and the push for sustainable building practices mean that the workforce needs new, specialized skills—leading to even more investment in training programs. Retention is another major hurdle. High turnover rates are making it difficult for companies to maintain a stable workforce, further complicating the hiring process. Speaking with a Civil Engineering Site Manager this AM and the conversation actually stunned me. Me: "Okay appreciate we're going to stay passively on the market but you're happy right now. Out of interest, how do you find your Engineers?" (The classic recruiter line) Site Manager: "Ah we have an agency that deals with all of our vacancies and manages the other external agencies - I can refer you" Me: "Ah class cheers, what's the crack? How many agencies on there, what are the rates etc, do you know?" SM: "I think you have to pay £1500 to sign up, they have their own rates and margins that they need you to work to, last I checked there was 93 agencies on the list and I have to fight to sign anyone on. A lot of hoops to jump through" Has anyone ever heard anything this ridiculous??? 93 agencies?! It's worth bearing in mind that this company I would describe as mid-size, tops. They don't have 1000s jobs a year to fill. Fair play to the recruiter that tied that deal up, but not for me thanks. #hiring #psl #recruiting #engineering

I was recently having a conversation with a colleague in the civil construction industry, and the same theme came up yet again – finding the right talent is a significant challenge. Post-pandemic, the industry has seen a shift. Companies are juggling fluctuating workloads, and while projects continue to roll in, there’s a serious gap when it comes to filling key roles with qualified professionals. We’re not just talking about any hire – we’re looking for people who can lead, execute, and manage large-scale projects in an ever-demanding landscape. The issue isn’t just about skill. It’s about finding someone who has the right mix of technical expertise and leadership. It’s about experience, the ability to manage teams, budgets, and deadlines under pressure. And let’s not forget industry-specific requirements like licensing and local experience – especially for senior roles like project managers, civil engineers, or land surveyors. The question I keep hearing from employers is: “Where do we find these people?” The good news is that, while challenging, it’s not impossible. A well-thought-out approach to recruitment that focuses on tapping into niche markets and leveraging relationships can go a long way. We have to be more proactive, creative, and strategic in how we engage with potential candidates. This is where staffing partners play a pivotal role—helping bridge the gap and find the right fit.
