This is a helpful reading list for anyone who is interested in the security of the Arctic region in these troubled times. Here's an extract: "In 2021, the interim U.S. National Security Strategy made no mention od the Arctic. The final version released in October 2022 confirmed that the Arctic had become a priority, changing the U.S. approach to Arctic affairs, security, science and much more." #usa #arcticsecurity #arcticregion #readinglist

The Arctic Great Game Won’t Be Won in U.S. Shipyards The answer to this question isn't for us to wait for our extremely limited shipbuilding industry to generate icebreakers. Congress needs to address the Jones Act, stop pandering to special interests, be pragmatic, and start looking at procuring icebreakers and Offshore Arctic Patrol Vessels from allies like Finland, which has a robust Arctic shipbuilding industry. I would counsel not undercutting our national shipbuilding industry, just augmenting. We are not tooled for Great Power Competition, and until we are, we need to outsource. The Cato Institute has written about this and others.

Recent #houthiattacks on maritime vessels in the Suez Canal, Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb brought #geopoliticalrisk at chokepoints to the forefront. That prompted a comparative look at ❄ Arctic routes using the notional route of Rotterdam to Yokohama. Shorter distances are a common benefit discussed regarding Arctic routes (~7,000-8,000 nm vs ~11,000 nm). An under-represented advantage is the avoidance of the geopolitical hot spots along traditional routes. It's not all ☀ and 🌈 though. 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gpdF2FPS Key Take-Aways: 🔥Arctic shipping routes avoid geopolitical hot spots presented by some geographic chokepoints. 🔥But, environmental and operational factors detract from using Arctic shipping lanes. 🔥And, the shortest Arctic route (the NSR) is controlled by #russia

Join me and the Young Security Conference in the #Amerikahaus tomorrow, Friday the 16th, at 17:30 for a discussion on #Arctic security and defense policies. The event will focus on #US and #EU security and defence policy in the Arctic. The event will highlight the lack of comprehensive and concrete measures or financial commitments to achieve these goals. How the EU and the US can develop more proactive and comprehensive strategies for the Arctic to address the challenges of climate change and ensure security in the region will be discussed at the event with four outstanding speakers: Clara Ganslandt, Special Envoy for Arctic Matters and Head of the Western Europe /Arctic / Regional Division Mike Kiselycznyk, Senior Advisor, Office of the U.S. Coordinator for the Arctic Region Michael Link, Member of Parliament, German Bundestag & Coordinator of Transatlantic Intersocietal Cooperation of Cultural and Information Policy Nicolas Jouan, Senior Analyst, RAND Corporation, Europe Zdeněk Rod, Project Manager and Research Fellow Young Security Conference . 1moA question, was the IMO Polar Code boundary used to define ships entering Arctic waters, or was a different criteria used?
