During the discussion with Norma Barbacci, Dr. Nelly Robles García emphasized how this project will serve as a catalyst for academic inquiry, cultural heritage preservation and economic growth in the region. "The Tehuacán-Cuicatlán region is one of Southern Mexico's three cradles of civilization, yet it's largely understudied... The sites that we've chosen to restart the cultural studies of the region, the Ruta del Rio Grande, are crucial for understanding both the rich cultural and natural history of the area, which holds immense biodiversity and historical significance. The work now is to make a roadmap of what has to be done. There is a lot of work ahead of us. It's a task that seems almost impossible. It’s time to stop hiding our Latinidad and bring it boldly into every space we occupy. No more code-switching to make others comfortable. We shouldn’t have to conform to outdated expectations of success. Let’s break free from the idea that we must leave our Latinidad at the door to be accepted. Last night, I watched The Long Game on Netflix—a powerful story about five young Mexican-American caddies who dared to challenge the status quo by learning to play golf and compete in tournaments. In an era when Mexican-Americans were only seen as caddies, their journey was groundbreaking. The film also sheds light on a Mexican-American superintendent who, despite his military service and passion for golf, faced enormous barriers to being accepted into a prestigious golf club because of the color of his skin. A theme that struck me was the “survival rules” the coach taught these young men. He believed that to be taken seriously, they had to assimilate—follow unwritten rules just to be allowed in those spaces. That was in 1955, but as I watched, I realized how much this struggle still resonates today. Latinos are often expected to check certain boxes to gain respect in professional spaces, sometimes at the cost of suppressing our true selves. A Coqual study found that 40% of Hispanic and Latino/a professionals still feel pressured to cover up aspects of who they are to advance in their careers. While we’ve made progress in increasing Latino representation in leadership, there’s still a long way to go. Companies miss out on the unique values, passion, creativity, and talent we bring when we’re allowed to thrive as our authentic selves. I’m deeply proud of the generations before me who fought for the opportunities I have today. I’m also inspired by my generation’s courage in challenging organizations that stifle our authenticity. January marks 6 months since I joined the team at First Priority of South Florida. Here are a few core values and truths that I have learned so far: 1. To do this questions you have to keep asking yourselves as leaders; Do you pour into your team daily? Are you showing them what it means to serve others first before themselves? Are you making them uncomfortable in a way that is helping them grow in every aspect of their life? Is the environment giving them opportunity to learn and adapt and grow? #ServingOthers

For Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing the successes and achievements of BARDA employees. Meet Connie Song, Lead Contract Specialist, Division of Contract Management and Acquisitions. One of Connie’s greatest career achievements to date is having the opportunity to support the BARDA mission and working with such a talented and dedicated group. She added, “specifically providing contracting support to the Division of Research, Innovation and Ventures (DRIVe) in launching new and novel program initiatives.” Connie’s advice to young women who are just starting their professional careers is: “stay true to yourself and pursue your passions. Those incremental steps (some of which will feel like steps backwards) toward achieving every goal you set out to tackle is part of the experience that makes those more challenging moments worthwhile — there’s no failure in learning.” Women strengthen public health and national security with their dedication to meaningful work.
