I enjoyed attending the Chamber of Business & Industry Centre County’s launch of the Centre County Economic Development Strategy yesterday. Having helped to craft the Centre Region’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan five years ago, I left the event wondering about the interconnections between local economic development and local climate action. The CBICC and partners are striving to grow businesses, create new jobs, retain and attract population, and expand our housing stock over the next ten years. There is certainly a strong foundation to build on in Centre County, including interconnections with Penn State, a growing tech sector, and tourism to beautiful Happy Valley. For climate action, we set goals of 45% reduction in regional greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 80% by 2050 (relative to our 2010 emissions), largely through reductions from building and transportation. Can we meet both sets of goals? How do we make climate action integral to economic development planning, and not a separate conversation?

As Phoenix gears up for the transformative Halo Vista project, it’s crucial to approach this ambitious development with foresight. With a planned $7 billion investment and the potential for up to 120,000 jobs, Halo Vista could reshape the city’s economy and community. But with great opportunity comes the need for strategic caution. The semiconductor industry is booming, but reliance on one sector can bring risks. Diversifying the types of businesses and industries within Halo Vista will be key to long-term resilience. The influx of residents and workers may challenge Phoenix’s housing and transport systems. Proactive infrastructure and housing strategies are essential to avoid congestion and ensure affordability. Phoenix’s limited water resources require sustainable practices in water use and conservation. Integrating green infrastructure early will help mitigate environmental impacts. When done right, large-scale developments like Halo Vista can benefit communities for generations. Phoenix can create a balanced, inclusive, and sustainable development model by anticipating these challenges. What would you prioritize in a development of this scale? #EconomicDevelopment #SustainableGrowth #HaloVista #Phoenix #UrbanPlanning #BusinessFlare https://lnkd.in/ewnUENki
