STOP LOOKING FOR SQUARE PEGS
Rounded candidates are the best candidates.
They understand how their role connects to a wider business strategy and can relate to the other roles required to work together for the business to succeed.
They're far less likely to build a defensive moat around their team or to take an unhelpful 'them versus us' attitude to other parts of the business.
Yet so many recruiters are only looking for squares- candidates with CVs that have straight lines and tickable boxes.
Meanwhile careers are becoming squiggly and the workforce is aging.
So we really need to start embracing career curves.
To give an example, a well known drinks business was recently recruiting for someone to help define its sports sponsorship strategy, manage the rights it had already acquired and to oversee successful activation of them.
They had an applicant who had actively worked on (to name a few) major sponsorships including Olympics, FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League, Premier League, Formula 1, ATP Tennis, WTA Tennis, ICC Cricket, 6 Nations Rugby, Rugby World Cup, FIS Snowsports, Golf and Sailing. For big brands. Client and agency side.
Ideal wouldn't you think? Well as it turns out, no. The reason the recruiter gave: They didn't see them as a sports marketing specialist because, "...they'd worked on other things outside of sports sponsorship too."
It's hardly surprising, given the candidate had been working in marketing for 30 years, that they'd built some breadth to their experience, not just depth.
It was the brewery's loss.
I've helped build some fantastic, high-performing, marketing teams over the years- both as a CMO and as an advisor.
(TBH I've made some hiring mistakes too.)
But when I look back at the best hires I've made over my career, they were frequently people with skills and experience from adjacent categories or disciplines, which brought a new or better perspective to their roles.
So, to end my ramble for today, I exhort:
If you've got a hole in your org, look for a round peg to fill it.
Have a lovely weekend x
