“If you look at the size of the addressable market, it’s still quite small relative to the capital that has been raised.” At the 2024 Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles, CEO Michael Arougheti outlines how private credit has ‘quite a lot of room to grow’ despite its expansion in recent years. "In an era when racial equity-focused funds and corporate programs face mounting legal challenges and pushback, the impulse to retreat is palpable. "As investors, allocators and advisors, how do we respond? For us, it starts with the recognition of capital as an equalizer, balancer and normalizer. "And it ends with a call to double down." Insightful breakfast talk this morning by the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA) on the subject of ‘Liquidity Tools in Private Markets’ (for funds). Suzi Gillespie, Dana Haimoff, Brad Mitchell, Stephen Quinn, Joana Scaff Lots of insight into - Continuation vehicles (holding winners not zombies, for long) - NAV facilities (for accelerating distributions and M&A growth opportunities) - Lines of Credit - CapCall lines (easing the time it takes for GPs to receive investors funds) - Secondaries - Retaining capacity in a fund as a buffer vs recycling capital - Fund financing is becoming ever more a relationship product. - Challenges of using tools certain tools (costs, cross collaterialisation and systematic risk, potential for distributions to be recalled) - The possibility of new players (insurance, pension funds) coming to market with new products. - Reminds me of these pitchbook articles from last year: - https://lnkd.in/eitY_8X8 - https://lnkd.in/ejJhVqAg #venturecapital #VentureDebt #tech #funds

Great PE panel this morning @ Markets Group #ALTSUK. Key insights: • PE is expected to continue outperforming public markets, with most opportunities centred around the mid-market. • As such, private markets, particularly private equity, are essential for inclusion in a long-term strategic asset allocation. • Despite recent market challenges, investor appetite remains robust, with an increased focus on thorough due diligence to identify top managers. • Co-investments offer a valuable route to reducing fees, and for those capable, up to 50% of an institutional portfolio could be allocated accordingly. #PrivateEquity; #AlternativeInvestments; #AssetAllocation; #InvestmentStrategy

Real Deals asked several LPs about their views on the private equity market. Dominic Abt, Investment Professional at LGT Capital Partners, explains how we select managers for our primary private equity strategies and what has changed in the current market environment. Dominic believes that the fundraising market has not differentiated enough between more and less attractive propositions in recent years. Now that we are seeing more of this bifurcation, GPs are being forced to focus on their models, their sophistication, their differentiation and the value they add to LPs’ portfolios. LGT Capital Partners has a long history of backing first-time funds or emerging managers, some of which are now the largest private equity funds, and we continue to have relationships with these firms. Managing Partner Rene Canezin recently sat down with Paola Aurisicchio at LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) to discuss how private credit is increasingly tapping into the wealth management channel to broaden fundraising efforts beyond institutional investors as more investors continue to look to access private credit. Rene notes, "What has changed over the last few years is that the market has now developed products targeting wealth investors by providing them liquidity, although [liquidity is] still limited.” For the full piece, read here: https://shorturl.at/uwCM0

As our firm name suggests, the private debt market is constantly evolving. I recently had an interesting discussion with Paola Aurisicchio at LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group), delving into the changing fundraising landscape. Historically, wealth investors are under-allocated to the private debt asset class, but recent developments suggest this may not be the case for long. For example, asset managers across the space are launching private BDCs, and I expect the use of these vehicles to continue to gain in popularity as firms seek to target the wealth channel. At Evolution, we offer differentiated and bespoke credit strategies which include pooled funds and separate accounts for a broad range of investors including pensions, endowments, institutional and high net worth clients. "Our second observation is the extended duration of the new funds relative to the traditional 5-7-year periods. Carlyle raised the fund with capital committed for 10-15 years, bringing some permanency to the funding structure. The more permanent pool of “dry powder” will result in less reliance on LP partners for funding should markets enter a period of “difficulty”.
