Check out this really interesting new blog on ConnexUs from Catherine Howell!
When we talk about increasing investments in fragile and conflict affected contexts it cannot be just about increasing the quantity of investment, but also rigorously interrogate who is benefiting from investments. Are the benefits and wealth creation of an investment equitably distributed or are they reinforcing injustice, inequality and the violence of exclusion young people increasingly describe facing? In this blog for Investing and Partnering with Youth for Peace, Catherine Howell explores the importance of shared prosperity as a lens to guide investments and funding to positively contribute to peaceful outcomes with and for young people. Check it out on ConnexUs below https://lnkd.in/dHb4kvEH #IPYP #Youth4Peace

AID2024 Theme: “Activate With Africa: Climate Change, Connections, And Action” Africa is a diverse continent with over 1 billion people, half of whom will be under 25 by 2050 (The World Bank). As the world’s youngest continent, all eyes are looking toward Africa as the next frontier for growth and development. The region has abundant human and natural resources that can promote inclusive growth and reduce poverty. Africa also has the world’s largest free trade zone, The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and a market of 1.2 billion people, thereby allowing it to carve out a unique development path by leveraging its resources and people, including those in the diaspora as well as friends of Africa. Africa is making remarkable strides on so many fronts, including governance, healthcare, education, and fintech, and it is imperative that we keep up the momentum. Taking bold steps to tackle climate change is crucial in building a sustainable, thriving future for everyone. Despite contributing only two to three percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, Africa is the world’s most vulnerable region to the effects of climate change. The continent is experiencing extreme weather conditions like droughts and floods, making it challenging to grow crops, access clean water, and maintain good health. This situation is particularly dire for those who depend on agriculture for survival. If urgent measures are not taken to address climate change, many communities across Africa will face a bleak future, hindering Africa’s efforts to position itself as a world leader and forge a prosperous, unified, and peaceful continent. How can we activate the African diaspora, Africans on the continent, and friends of Africa to contribute toward Africa’s sustainable growth and development? How can we improve the continent’s infrastructure, boost markets, and create a healthy environment for communities? What a timely symposium. What a time to be alive! #climateaction #ADIS24 #climatechange

Excited for what’s ahead at #ADIS24. Championing climate action and connections globally. So thrilled to be participating and speaking at this year’s African Diaspora Investment Symposium happening at the Hayes Mansion, San Jose, California, USA 🇺🇸- Silicon Valley. #ActivatewithAfrica. The future of Africa is intricately woven with the dreams and aspirations of its youth. To unlock the continent's true potential, we must invest in their education, empower their voices, invest in the upscaling of their locally led solutions and social enterprises and provide opportunities for them to thrive. Young people are not the leaders of tomorrow; they are the change-makers of today, they are leading today and shaping a brighter future for generations to come.

🌍 World Development Information Day: Mobilizing for Change 🌍 Today, as we observe World Development Information Day, we are reminded of the vital role that information and public opinion play in driving development efforts worldwide. Key Takeaways: Understanding Development: It's crucial for both developing and developed nations to deepen public understanding of the interconnected nature of development initiatives and the necessity to support emerging economies. Engaging Public Opinion: Mobilizing public opinion should be a primary responsibility of national bodies. Governments can enhance this by creating or strengthening institutions focused on raising awareness and encouraging participation in development goals. Empowering the Youth: By improving information dissemination, especially among young people, we can foster greater awareness of development challenges and enhance efforts toward international cooperation. Global Collaboration: It’s essential for all stakeholders to collaborate on research and technology to bridge gaps in development. This is particularly significant in the context of the digital divide, which continues to hinder progress for many nations. Action for Change: Let's harness the power of information and communication technologies to drive economic growth, eradicate poverty, and promote social inclusion globally. On this day, let's commit ourselves to not only understanding but also actively contributing to the solutions for development challenges facing our world. Together, we can make a difference! #WorldDevelopmentInformationDay #DevelopmentGoals #PublicOpinion #YouthEmpowerment #GlobalCooperation #DigitalDivide #SustainableDevelopment

I have never been happy than today supporting things that can bring great change not just for Africa but globally. Quality Education in any society is a bridge to great success whether formal or informal. The immense breakthrough that comes with quality education enhance development through discoveries and advanced technologies. We can go and on when quality education is mentioned. Affordable and clean Energy can be driven through our firm knowledge of education but this time it's what we need in every society. The world continues to advance towards sustainable energy targets – but not fast enough. Ensuring universal access to affordable electricity by 2030 means investing in clean energy sources such as solar, wind and thermal. Expanding infrastructure and upgrading technology to provide clean energy in all developing countries is a crucial goal that can both encourage growth and help the environment. Climate Actions is now a "must read and watchout term" in every sector today. Though our everyday life depends on reliable and affordable energy, yet, the consumption of energy is the dominant contributor to climate change, accounting for more than 60 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions. According to statistics, from 2015 to 2021, the proportion of the global population with access to electricity has increased from 81 to 91 percent. Peace, Justice and strong Institutions? who doesn't need peace, justice and strong Institutions for folster develoment? The Global Goals.16, promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels for you and I. Since I was 9, Good Governance has become everyday song. During my primary school days, the definition sank in and can be said off-hand without wasting a minute. In Africa and other countries, leaders easily forget to practice or apply what they learned for corrupt gains. What then is Good governance? It's processes and institutions producing results that meet the needs of society while making the best use of resources at their disposal without compromise. People-driven development". what does it actually mean in practice? "Development is not about the delivery of goods to a passive citizenry. It is about active involvement and growing empowerment," according to the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP). Development is "a people-driven process". Communities can effectively control funds and use them more efficiently and honestly than development agencies with bloated and overpaid bureaucracies. At YouthUp Global Advocacy program, we bring sustainable development goals to a maximum reality to position the future generations with realities for future outcomes. From quality education, affordable and clean Energy, climate actions,PJSI, Good Governance, and PDD we set to let our voices heard for a common purpose

I appreciated the opportunity to attend the Biden-Harris Administration's launch of its new global development strategy. You can read the new strategy for yourself (link below) but I wanted to highlight a few things that stood out to me: -- A return to focusing on poverty alleviation and economic growth -- Samantha Power's choice to highlight the cost effectiveness of programs and investments in USAID's office of the chief economist -- Continued focus on locally-led development and open recognition that 10% of foreign assistance to local organizations is both a big improvement and still very low -- A laudable focus on investing in human capital including youth -- Appropriately high focus on public private partnerships, the need to leverage more private capital, and the importance of digital development https://lnkd.in/ed-SFVWb
