I’m a big fan of Duolingo’s brand and love how they’ve designed this new NYC office. Designing an office presents so many different considerations than product design. Yet we can identify many parallel design principles. Occupants = Personas Rooms = Screens Paint = Color Bench = Visual resting points Lighting = Light/Dark mode Decor = Decorative elements Hardware = UI Wayfinding = Nav and labels So many more… This is my approach whether I’m designing a museum exhibit or an app. It helps me consider the broader experience and I can apply thinking from the virtual world to the physical. "I thought he was ready for retirement. Turns out, he was just getting started." In 2012, I co-founded an online agency with a close friend. We didn't want to work from home, so we joined a shared office space – a concept that wasn't even widely recognized as "coworking" back then. It was here that I met Michael Wietkamp, a man who not only had a name that I immediately liked but also owned a printing empire. He had a deep understanding of the traditional print industry, the complexities of software development, and the creation of new business models. Over the years, Michael became more than a business associate who always had a fitting saying at the ready; he became a trusted partner. Our partnership extended into a friendship outside the office, with traditions like our annual trips to Cologne's Carnival. Even when our paths diverged during the pandemic, with him selling his print business and me diving into stylink, we stayed in touch. Fast forward to the end of 2023. Michael reached out – this time with a recommendation for a candidate at stylink. But as we talked, I realized he wasn’t ready to slow down. So, I made him an offer: to join stylink and lead our Sales and Direct Revenue efforts as our Chief Revenue Officer. Despite coming from an "old-school" industry, Michael was intrigued by the challenge of stepping into the world of influencer and creator marketing, where new opportunities arise constantly. Today, he's much more than just part of the team – he’s transforming it, bringing decades of entrepreneurial wisdom, leadership skills, and a contagious energy that is helping us shape the future of stylink. I often joke that I pulled him out of retirement and into a "fountain of youth" with this new venture. The truth is, I couldn’t be more grateful for his decision to join us. This week at InControlMN we had a unique team activity where everyone brought a photo of something deeply meaningful to them, but not immediately obvious why. My choice? My Kitchen Table. Why a table, you might ask? Well first, the benches at this table, unlike traditional chairs, invite an open mindset. Chairs often imply a fixed number of seats, suggesting a limit to participation. They encourage people to think that there is no more space at the table because we cannot possibly fit more chairs. Benches, on the other hand, encourage us to slide over, make room, and welcome more #perspectives to the table. There’s not a defined seat. In fact it all just becomes one seat with multiple people sitting on it with multiple perspectives brought to that table. And second, as someone who loves to challenge the status quo, this table also represents my willingness to ‘flip tables’ when needed. To #disrupt and rebuild systems that don't serve us well, ensuring they’re structured in ways that truly benefit everyone. The good thing about acoustical booths: If you bang your head against the wall in frustration, they are usually padded. A padded cell. Sounds like a great place to commute to! Booths have their place. Good acoustical fundamentals in the workplace are critical. Avoid trendy things. FOCUS (yes I said it) on creating a comfortable environment where people can work effectively. This mouse trap has already been invented.

"Unleashing the Colors of Collaboration: A Journey Through Holi 🎨" As we celebrate Holi, the Festival of Colors, it's momentous to reflect on how significant colors are not just in our celebrations but also in our professional lives. Reminding myself of this, I designed a "Holi Poster" for our office gathering that amplified metaphoric connections between the vibrant Holi hues and team collaboration. • RED: Resilience - There are downfalls, yes, they are part and parcel of any project. As a team, we rise back with renewed energy and determination much like the fiery red. • BLUE: Creativity - Just like the vast blue skies and oceans invite contemplation, novel ideas emerge when we let our minds soar beyond conventional boundaries. • GREEN: Growth - Green symbolizes fertility, auspiciousness. In my team, it stands in for the constant growth and development we strive for. • YELLOW: Optimism - Yellow, the color of sunshine. Vivid, warm, inviting - reflects our team's positive spirit and optimism, even in daunting scenarios. Working on this poster was enlightening as it gave me a chance to see my team and our work dynamics in a colorful new perspective. Working my butt off (Quite literally) I've been thinking a lot lately about the different paths we take in our careers, especially when it comes to creativity. Both of my parents are in creative fields: my mom works her magic as a beautician, while my dad's all about crafting beautiful furniture for homes and offices. But here's the thing: while I'm totally into the creative scene too, I see myself thriving in a different kind of environment. Unlike my parents, who are out there hustling all day long, running around to meet clients and manage supplies, I'm more drawn to a modern, cozy workspace. So, as I was diving into "The Minimalist" recently, I had this lightbulb moment: why not create an illustration to show how different our worlds really are? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!
