Did you know that the United States has approximately 59.5 million acre-feet per year of urban stormwater runoff potential? This is equivalent to an annual average of more than 53 billion gallons per day.   The Pacific Institute released the findings of its national assessment, quantifying the volumetric potential of urban stormwater runoff in the United States. This pivotal study, conducted in partnership with 2NDNATURE, reveals that urban areas across the United States could generate an average of 59.5 million acre-feet of stormwater annually, equivalent to over 90% of the total municipal and industrial water withdrawals in 2015. It follows the Pacific Institute’s 2022 groundbreaking report, “The Untapped Potential of California’s Urban Water Supply: Water Efficiency, Water Reuse, and Stormwater Capture,” which revealed California could reduce urban water use by 30%-48% through investments in water efficiency measures, more than triple municipal water reuse, and significantly increase stormwater capture across the state.
