EMbracing fundamental and quant investing in emerging markets
Many asset managers have quant and fundamental investment capabilities that are competing in the same pond of assets. Robeco is no different, having very strong fundamental and quant teams. Yet, this competition is a very healthy and collaborative one, with both camps being eager to learn from and leverage the other camp’s edge. I have witnessed this spirit first-hand when investigating Robeco’s emerging market equities capabilities together with Vera Roersma and Matthias Hanauer.
Our brand-new white paper dives into a large universe of competing EM equities strategies. Specifically, we flesh out the salient differences of the two investment styles, quant and fundamental. Do you have to be fundamental to succeed in emerging markets? Or are fundamental investors just factor investors in disguise? Reinforcing the genuine nature of both investment styles, we highlight different use cases how to seize the benefits of style diversification across quant and fundamental investment styles in EM equities, including a benchmark-relative core investment, a sustainable core investment, and a conservative completion portfolio. Overall, our study highlights the complementary nature of quant and fundamental strategies and the associated EM investment benefits.
