Chief Patient Officer | American Cancer Society | Physician Executive

Since its early years, the field of palliative care has been able to grow its research workforce through multi-sector investments in career development awards to early career researchers. The most notable early on was the Project on Death in American (PDIA) faculty scholars program. This program created the first cohort of stalwarts in the field. including my mentors Diane E. Meier, MD, FACP, FAAHPM, R. Sean Morrison, MD, Steven Pantilat, Anthony Back, and others who have shaped the science and ignited further generations of researchers. And after the decade-long investment by Cambia Health Foundation and good friend Peggy Maguire and by the Palliative Care Research Cooperative Group (PCRC) founded by my heroes Amy Abernethy, Christine Ritchie, Jean Kutner, it's time for there to be long-standing investments in the science of palliative care and the researchers who aim to move person-centric techniques forward. With immense thanks to American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and members of the Patient Quality of Life Coalition, there is now dedicated federal dollars in the appropriations bill for palliative care research at the The National Institutes of Health. This is monumental. To the tune of $12.5M. While palliative care research has been funded partially by several different institutes, dedicated dollars from appropriations has not been the norm. A time to celebrate. Because there remains too much preventable suffering from serious illness. https://lnkd.in/ePNiu82f
