As a business, you can’t be for everyone. But being flexible and learning from your customers is key. One of my go-to local cafes is big on their no-laptop policy 🚫 Having moderated panels on CX and working in marketing, the customer experience is really top of mind, so it got me thinking. After sharing the situation, I tagged Daniel Lewis — who has owned cafes and gives talks about customer service — and he filmed a video response (shared below). In this particular cafe, the staff comes around holding up a sign warning everyone that laptops aren’t allowed after 5 pm. They’re not closing, they’re open for several more hours. I believe they want people to buy alcohol and chill. However, they’re essentially kicking out loyal customers and fans. Customers that love their product and space so much that they’ll bring others and buy multiple drinks in a day, but who get asked to leave regularly. No exceptions (you can’t even pay to stay). This creates an odd relationship between customers and staff. It also tarnishes a relationship with the brand. You can work really hard to build a beautiful brand and business, but do one thing that turns people away. As a business owner, you can make decisions and curate the experience the way you'd like, to attract who you want and create the environment you want. But be mindful that you're not turning away your core customers. Here's Daniel's thoughts on this:
