Denmark to start conscripting women for military service This is the right step towards gender equality, because men have always been forced to sacrifice their lives for the country, while women did not have to risk their lives. The Danish government is seeking to achieve "full equality between the sexes". But an even better decision would have been to abolish conscription for men, so that they can pursue their passions, instead of wasting their time and happiness serving the army. https://lnkd.in/gWtH-jsq

Transgender people are nearly twice as likely to serve in the U.S. military than the general U.S. population. In 2014, it was estimated that 15,500 transgender individuals were currently serving in the U.S. military. 134,300 transgender people are veterans or retired from the Guard/Reserve service. 21% of transgender people have served in the armed forces. 0.6% of adults who have served in the military identify as transgender. Most people know someone who identifies as gay, lesbian, or bisexual in their life. Many do not know (or think they don’t know) a transgender person. Many people also aren’t close with someone who has served in the military. Put those two together, and you’d think that there are very few transgender military veterans, but that’s not the case. If another ban on trans military service were to take effect, it would be detrimental not just to the individuals affected, but to our military and national security. If someone is willing and able to serve, they should be able to. Inclusivity makes us stronger. Faced with new geopolitical challenges, new changes in the European air Denmark becomes the third country in Europe to introduce mandatory female military conscription, after Norway and Sweden, changing the current system in which women could only volunteer for military service. The Government also announced that it will extend the period of mandatory military service from four to 11 months, for both women and men. The objective, according to interlocutors, is a more robust recruitment, including full gender equality, which should contribute to solving the challenges of defense, national mobilization and the strength of our armed forces in the face of the new challenges that began after the invasion of Crimea.

Click to open all the details of the last week session of LSE IDEAS discussion series where I have also participated. We talked about Ukrainian women’s new roles in the time of the war. One of those discussions when we shared not only research data, but or own experience. In particular, how does this look like to be a female frontline journalist? How do women advocate for changes in the frame of expert diplomacy? How do they volunteer? There is also some latest data presented by myself and prepared by Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation regarding female perspective on the war scenarios.
🔙 Catch up on last week's Russia-Ukraine Dialogues event with Diana Butsko, Hanna Hopko, Mariia and Leon Hartwell PhD. The key focus of this panel was on the transformation of the military landscape, exploring how women's increased participation in military and paramilitary roles has altered societal perceptions. 🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/ewHErc79 💻 Watch on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/ewCHr9AD

⚔Women in some of the Scandinavian countries are already subject to mandatory military service. Now the Danish government plans to introduce female conscription from 2026, making it only the third European nation - alongside Norway and Sweden - to require women to serve in the armed forces. 🚧I remember when the war in Ukraine started, discussion on why Ukrainian men, opposed to women, are banned from crossing the boarder to escape from the conflict. These days we have to be ready for discussion on how gender equality shall look like in the context of Women, Peace and Security and in XXI it might look completely different than in 2000 when the UN resolution 1325 reaffirming the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations, peace-building, peacekeeping, humanitarian response and in post-conflict reconstruction and stressing the importance of their equal participation and full involvement in all efforts for the maintenance and promotion of peace and security was adopted. Gender stereotypes and misconceptions have long posed challenges to women's full integration into armed forces. However, countries like #Finland, #Norway, #Switzerland, and #Armenia are leading the way in shattering these barriers. These nations are actively increasing women's participation in their military forces, adopting innovative strategies to ensure #genderequality and empower women in roles traditionally dominated by men. Curious about how they're making it happen? Discover the strategies for change and the inspiring progress being made to create more inclusive armed forces: https://lnkd.in/dXsurZA7
