When COVID was new and the world was forced to change, we ushered in a new era for healthcare. Using e-patient portals, physicians and health systems realized that this technology granted the ability to reach more people than ever before - bridging longstanding care gaps. In one study published in the JAMA Network, researchers estimated that, in 2018, racial and ethnic-based health disparities carried an economic burden for the US of up to $451 billion, the equivalent of $1,377 per person. How do we even begin to address these disparities? We can start by identifying those disparities most prevalent in our own member populations and applying a structured quality improvement approach to the issues identified.
