dominic gachuma is asking whether countries can ever get artisanal #gold mining right. I would say that the answer is a clear yes, but not in isolation. As a reminder, close to 20 million #asgm participants work across 80+ countries, producing 20% of 🌍 gold. 85%+ of miners operate informally. The sector is diverse, but too many miners experience poverty and vulnerability to predatory intermediates as they work in unsafe conditions. #mercury contamination is a scourge. Including families, 100 million people are wholly dependent on ASGM. Professionalizing ASGM, or more broadly #asm, fundamentally improves the dignity and productivity of work while catalyzing #sustainabledevelopment. Professionalization at scale involves multiple stakeholders: 🏹 countries - #legal recognition and public policies that promote formalization as well as broader development based on ASM 🏹 investors - an investment marketplace that supports ASM formalization is needed; dignity and productivity that is delivered is commercially reasonable for #mininginvestment and #impactinvestment. Risks are managed through targeted diverse project selection 🏹 engagement experts - formalization solutions start with voices of miners and neighboring communities, reflecting local realities. Engagement expertise requires a focus on flexible frameworks that target solutions in locally relevant ways 🏹 downstream value chains - large #mining companies share land with artisanal miners, refineries co-mingle product, end-users like high end jewellers use product that is produced by artisanal miners - active collaboration and support of ASM professionalization can flip reputation, conflict and legal risks into joint productivity opportunities. There are fundamental opportunities 🏹 industry bodies - the World Gold Council, LBMA and standard setters like ICMM and IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance have important roles in defining and delivering responsible practices. Mexico's president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), has introduced a proposal to Congress to amend the Constitution, including a clause that no mining concessions be granted or permitted for open pit mining. Despite the low chance of success, an open pit mining ban in Lopez's proposals has caused alarm in the mining sector, threatening an estimated 70% of Mexico's copper production. Trustco's Meya Mining Investment confirms N$14.3bn diamond resource Trustco Group Holdings Ltd says its associate, Meya Mining, released a promising diamond resource estimate for the Meya River Kimberlite Dyke in Sierra Leone. Trustco Group holds a 19.5% stake in Meya Mining. The report confirms a total kimberlite ore of 6.05 million tonnes down to a depth of 800 metres. Trustco's Deputy CEO Quinton van Rooyen said with an assessed in-situ grade of 33 carats per hundred tonnes, this translates to a total of 1.99 million carats valued at US$763 million (N$14.3 billion). https://lnkd.in/d22cvAPM #namibia #mining #diamonds #sierraleone
