This admonitory order is sometimes followed by a self-deprecating phrase, Do as I say , not as I do , meaning “don't imitate my behavior but obey my instructions.” This order first appeared in John Selden's Table-Talk (c. 1654): “Preachers say, 'Do as I say, not as I do. The phrase "do as I say, not as I do" is an idiomatic expression that is often used to convey the idea that someone is instructing others to follow a certain set of rules or guidelines, even though they themselves do not adhere to those same rules or guidelines. Essentially, it implies that the speaker is telling others to behave in a certain way, but they themselves do not practice what they preach. This phrase is often used in a critical or admonishing context, highlighting the hypocrisy of someone who gives advice or sets expectations for others that they do not follow themselves. It can suggest a double standard or inconsistency in the behavior of the person saying it! My friend for many years I was educating people living with diabetes about the importance of healthy eating and doing physical activity but I was weighting 344 pounds ! For many years I struggled with an eating disorder... binge eating, it took a whole army to help me get out of the hole where I was! I have now modified behaviors and three years later I weigh 160 pounds, I still haven't reached my goal! I continue to struggle , eating disorders are difficult, particularly when coupled with diabetes! Until health care professionals and diabetes educators walk in our shoes they will never understand the daily struggle we live, I can now proudly say do what I say and I do but please let me know how I can help you. Sharing My Journey: Prioritizing Health Amidst Challenges 🌟 Hey LinkedIn fam, It's been a while since I last connected through video, and I wanted to share a little update with you all. Recently, I've been navigating some unexpected health challenges that required my full attention. I was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia, which made it incredibly difficult for me to film videos as I battled with relentless coughing fits. But beyond just the physical symptoms, this experience has been a stark reminder of the importance of self-care. As someone who advocates for prioritizing well-being, I had to take my own advice and make my health the number one priority. Living with a motility disorder has always presented its own set of challenges, but recently, it's become even more daunting. I've found myself struggling more significantly with swallowing issues,(the cause of the pneumonia), forcing me to adapt my eating habits even further. It hasn't been easy, I'll admit. There have been tough moments where I've had to take a step back and focus on rest and recovery. But through it all, I've been reminded of the resilience that lies within each of us facing chronic conditions or disabilities. I share this journey with you all because I know many of you can relate to the ups and downs of living with health challenges. It's not always smooth sailing, but it's in these moments of struggle that we discover our strength and determination to keep pushing forward. As I continue to prioritize my health and well-being, I look forward to getting back into creating content that educates, inspires, and connects with all of you. 🌟 Spotlight: Eating Disorder Coalition Advocacy Day in Washington DC 🌟 I am so humbled and grateful to join and lead a team of advocates on May 8th as we advocate for the Kids Online Safety Act and Nutritional CARE Act to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals affected by eating disorders. The Eating Disorder Coalition Advocacy Day is a crucial opportunity to raise awareness and push for legislative change that will protect vulnerable individuals and promote access to essential resources and support. By advocating for the Kids Online Safety Act, we aim to address the harmful impact of online content and social media on body image and mental health, particularly for young people. This legislation will work to regulate harmful content and promote positive messaging around body image and self-esteem. This is a bill that so much work and effort has been devoted towards - I am believing this important legislation is passed. Additionally, the Nutritional CARE Act focuses on improving access to nutritional counseling and support for individuals struggling with eating disorders. This vital legislation will help ensure that individuals have access to the care and resources they need to recover and thrive. Making a difference in Washington DC on May 8th and always showing support for individuals affected by eating disorders! Looking forward to leading a great team! As I was putting this post together today, I was taken down memory lane. It was fun to revisit all the projects, workgroups, research, conferences, boards, speaking engagements, podcasts, media, grassroots advocacy, policy work, fat advocacy and education I've been involved with in the field of eating disorders. It's been an incredible 20+ years beginning in the year 2000 at a small cafe discussing the development of an eating disorders group that would advocate for policy changes (the Eating Disorders Coalition) to founding the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) and Weight Stigma Awareness Week. Over the last several years, I've been working to educate myself so I can provide direct services to those who are struggling to live life in larger/fat bodies (btw, I identify as fat, but I realize this word may not be comfortable for everyone). I now work with people on navigating life in general as a larger/fat person. From dealing with friends, family and our anti-fat culture, to the built environment and travel, to healthcare. I hold space for struggles, the relationship to food/movement, and provide insights from body liberation and the lived experience of navigating a world that oppresses and stigmatizes larger/fat bodies. Some of my clients have eating disorders or disordered eating. I work as an adjunct to their therapist and/or dietitian, and can assist in finding fat-positive therapy and nutrition services if necessary. I can also work on harm reduction strategies if a client does not have access to care because of how our society gate-keeps care for those who are underprivileged.
