As #PrideMonth comes to a close, we reflect on the meaningful events at Aristotle, including our partnership with APLA Health's Vance North Necessities of Life Program (NOLP), the largest network of food pantries for people with HIV. Aristotle employee volunteers collectively packed over 1,450 food boxes to support this initiative. At Aristotle, we believe in the power of community and making a positive impact. These values drive us to engage in meaningful initiatives that uplift those around us. We look forward to continuing our service efforts and thank APLA Health for allowing us to make a positive impact. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS's) decision to change PrEP coverage from Medicare Part D to Medicare Part B will adversely impact access to care for LGBTQ+ seniors and others at risk of HIV. Many pharmacies across the country – ranging from small, independent operations to large, retail-chain stores – are unable to bill effectively and accurately to Medicare Part B. As I mentioned in Equitas Health's latest update about this ongoing issue: “In an effort to increase access to care, CMS and the federal government have actually done the opposite. #PrideMonth, the worldwide celebration of #LGBTQ+ culture and rights, kicked off on June 1st with events around the globe. By prioritizing diversity and inclusion and implementing affirming practices for capturing SOGI data, we can work towards reducing health disparities and ensuring that LGBTQ+ cancer patients receive the care and support they deserve. A recent study published in JCO Oncology Practice assessed the routine collection of sexual orientation (SO) and gender identity (GI) data in cancer clinics to enhance equity in cancer care. LGBTQ+ employees often face challenges accessing medically necessary care, even with robust healthcare plans. There can be a lack of clarity on relevant services, making it difficult for employees to understand their benefits. Additionally, your LGBTQ+ employees may feel pressured to out themselves to gain information about gender-affirming care, for example. It's important for employers to develop and share an LGBTQ+ benefits guide outlining offerings specific to the LGBTQ+ community, including family formation services like IVF, HIV/AIDS care and transition related care. Being in the room with 25 years of #TobaccoControl history and #advocacy is such an amazing experience. One presenter said, “Policy changes the landscape and the way people think.” This is why I fight for institutional policy change, from laws to public health or health system policy. WE are changing the landscape. WE are changing the way people think. Often, #HealthJustice work is difficult. We sometimes do it in thankless situations. The work takes ALL of us.
